IWR6843ISK: Fully bandwith 60~60GHz setting with EVB question

Part Number: IWR6843ISK
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: , IWR6843

Dear Sirs

where can buy the fully bandwidth antenna with AWR IC  IWR IC ( Golden sample for performance validation)

The ISK & ODS EVB bandwith can't reach the 4G bandwith . ( The application will be downgrade in short range )

Question : if we use 4G bandwith setting but antenna can't meet , What will happen about the target result ?

                 Can help ?

Best Regards

Jasper

  • Hi Jasper,

Our hardware expert is currently unavailable but we should have a response for you the week of 23 December.

    Cheers,

  • We have verify  the  TI mmwave EVB with 3D couttning application but the result always can't meet reality environment .

What is the root cause ? sample code issue or antenna bandwidth issue or IC Bug ( 6843 3D lab why noy use DSP for it ?)

  • Hi Jasper,

IWR6843ISK has close to 3.75GHz impedance bandwidth, and IWR6843ISK-ODS has close to 2GHz impedance bandwidth around 62GHz.

If you would like to evaluate bandwidth then you may want to use IWR6843ISK  module. However field of view is narrower in elevation as compared to IWR6843ISK-ODS.

IWR6843 silicon supports 4GHz bandwidth, Antennas are limiting factor,  It is very challenging to design wide bandwidth (>4GHz) using simple patch arrays in thin substrates like 4-5mil. Wide-bandwidth could be achieved with the thicker substrate, However they are not best suited for the mmWave sensors. Also thicker substrates degrades the antenna radiation and coupling performance at shorter wavelengths.

If you set 4GHz bandwidth and If antenna cannot support such high bandwidths then antenna will not be able to transmit/receive intended power levels at those frequencies during the chirping, Hence RF sweeping bandwidth would be limited to what Antenna would support, This limits the range resolution (Range resolution is proportional to RF sweeping bandwidth).

    Thanks and regards,

  • Dear  CHETHAN KUMAR Y.B. Sir

              1.  Thank you fully support  . do you have any simulation report for these conditions for reference? ( IC full bandwidth setting (4GHz)  with smaller bandwidth antenna)

We have try TI ODS & ISK  EVB with 3D people counting lab but the counting performance always can't meet reality status (we are trying now ).

How much impact from the antenna or the G-tracking algorithm or others is a good topic for this application.

              2.  TI have any antenna design house partner list for reference?  or suggestion copy EVB for product design?

  • Hello,

You could refer to below E2E post for the Antenna simulations.

    https://e2e.ti.com/support/sensors/f/1023/p/749295/2775143#2775143

Could you please elaborate what problems you are seeing in 3D people counting lab?

For the 3rd Party partners, you could review below link who have developed mmWave sensors using TI chipsets.
