IWR6843AOPEVM: Using IWR6843AOPEVM for obstacle detection

Part Number: IWR6843AOPEVM

Hello Team,

We are planning to use this sensor to detect the obstacles for our machine, can you please give clarification over below points:

1. Is there any enclosure available for this sensor

2. If it is not available, what kind of material can be used for enclosure

3. We have to use this sensor where paint can get deposited on its or enclosure surface, does that will cause problems in detection

4. I guess we will get the output in the form of point cloud, does it similar to a stereo camera or what is the difference between them

5. Can this point cloud data can be processed by PCL library?

Can you please provide clarity over these points.

Saurabh

  • Hi Saurabh,

Please see section 5 for enclosure and Radome recommendation for our device:

    http://www.ti.com/lit/an/spracg5/spracg5.pdf

Will get back on item 4 and 5.

    Thanks

    Yogesh

  • Hello Yogesh,

Thanks for your response, and providing the information.

So we can use polycarbonate, polysterene or Teflon as the enclosure material.

Can you please put some light on below points also:

    - Is there any off the self enclosure available

    - And sorry for my limited knowledge, but as per our application, some paint can be deposited on enclosure surface.

So will this deposition will cause some problem in sensing?

Or better, for how much deposition (in microns) there will not be any affect in sensing

And also as you already told, can you please give clarification on point 4 and 5.

    Saurabh

  • Saurabh,

For the EVMs  in this case IWR6843AOPEVM enclosures are not available.

Typically paints are not recommended to be deposited on the enclosure surface to get best performance from the sensor, There are metallic paints which severally degrades the mmWave performance even with few microns (You could imagine like, this could acting as Faraday cage). Performance degradation also depends upon what extent of paint get's deposited on the enclosure surface.

Enclosures designed with certain thickens (which is a function of wavelength) and known dielectric constant to ensure it's transparent for mmWave signals.Hence, unknown dielectric constant material comes in contact with the enclosure there would be certain degradation in mmWave performance in terms of loss in the range or distortion to the radiation patterns. For quantification, one need to know the dielectric constant, loss tangent of the material and it need to be simulated in 3D electo-magnetic simulator with Radome and antenna.

    Thanks and regards,
