MMWCAS-RF-EVM: Will using long USB cables interfere with the measurements?

Part Number: MMWCAS-RF-EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MMWCAS-DSP-EVM,

Greetings.
I'm evaluating MMWCAS-RF-EVM mounted on MMWCAS-DSP-EVM with mmWave studio and Processor Radar SDK.
The system uses USB as well as Ethernet wire to transmit data to the host. If the length of the USB cable is increased to >15ft, would the data integrity suffer? Ethernet doesn't suffer at this length. Are there any limits to the length of the cables that can be used with the setup?

  • Hi Asher,

The MMWCAS-RF/DSP-EVM assembly does not use USB for data capture. USB is only used for console log and one-time manual configurations of the MMWCAS-DSP-EVM.

The Ethernet port is all that is used by mmWave Studio for the AWRx firmware loads, capture configurations and retrieving captured data from the SSD. You do not have to have USB attached for mmWave Studio to function.

I have used 15 foot Ethernet and 15 foot USB2.0 cables without any configuration or data retrieval issues. But I haven't pushed either further. It should be able to drive the normal Ethernet CAT5 runs of 100 meters max, but we have not verified that and it is usually more cable quality dependent at those longer run length.

    Thanks,

    -Randy

  • Hi Randy,

    Thank you for the response.

Since it didn't mess with mmWave studio, I'm going to assume that it won't mess with Processor SDK as Ethernet is used by that to transmit data as well.
