I am detecting 6 points on a 4cm diameter ball (wrapped with aluminium foil), which is suspended in the air by a fishing line. Referring to the attached image of the range-Doppler data cube, how does the awr1642 deal with side-lobes. is there by any chance that the extra points may be side-lobes from the actual target?

The peak-grouping function is disabled for the experiment...

Yes, this is possible. To avoid side lobes you would need to increase the cfar threshold
