IWR6843AOPEVM: minimum range and resolution

Part Number: IWR6843AOPEVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: IWR6843

Hello,
what is the minimum range and resolution of the IWR6843? I read in the following e2e that the minimum range is 3.75cm:

Less, eg 1cm is not possible?
What is the resolution at 3.75cm?

Regards, Holger

  • Dear HS WG_FAE:

Attached is a link to an application note which describes how to program the IWR6843 Chirp Parameters. Inside there is some useful information which combined with specifics of your application will hopefully answer your question. If you have any further inquires please don't hesitate to ask.

  • Hello Connor,

thanks for the app note. It is not clear for me how to calculate the minimum range (it points only to the maximum range). Also the range resolution is not clear for me. It says that you will get a range resolution of 4cm with 4GHz bandwith. My customer want to measure in the range of 3 to 30cm. A range resolution of 4cm is not accepted for these ranges.

  • Dear Holger:

So the range resolution of the device has an absolute minimum of 3.75cm. This number comes from the application note I gave you. Specifically range_res = (c)/(2*B) where c is the speed of light and B is the bandwidth. Notice that range_res is inversely proportional to the bandwidth. This means that we would need to increase the bandwidth to decrease the range resolution. The range resolution not only dictates how separated objects in a scene have to be to be distinguished, but it also dictates the minimum range of the device. This is because the detector an object in the scene as well.

Here is a link that could be useful to determine the chirp parameters needed to satisfy your application:
