CCS/HDC2010METER-EVM: MSP430: Error connecting to the target: Unknown device

Part Number: HDC2010METER-EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430FR5994, MSP-EXP430FR5994, , MSP430FR5969

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

Hello,

I'm using the eZ-FET (from MSP430FR5994 LaunchPad dev kit part #MSP-EXP430FR5994) to attempt to debug/program the HDC2010METER-EVM.

I downloaded the HDC2010METER-EVM (snac077) and imported it into CCS (Version 10.0.0.00010).

The first problem encountered was minor. The original CCS project download was compiled with an earlier version (TI v16.9.4.LTS).

I upgraded the project to TI v20.2.0.LTS rather than try and download the earlier compiler version.

Then I made sure the target device was set correctly and it was (MSP430FR5969). This is the MCU on the HDC2010METER-EVM.

I am confronted with this error: "MSP430: Error connecting to the target: Unknown device"

I made sure to remove all the jumpers on MSP-EXP430FR5994-J101 to isolate the eZ-FET (v1.3) from the rest of the eval kit.

I soldered a 4-pin header to HDC2010METER-EVM-J1 and made the following pin-to-pin connections:

  • MSP-EXP430FR5994-J101 pin SBWTCK  to HDC2010METER-EVM-J1 pin T
  • MSP-EXP430FR5994-J101 pin SBWTDIO to HDC2010METER-EVM-J1 pin R

MSP-EXP430FR5994-LED101 (green) is the only LED that is lit.

Then I tried making the following pin-to-pin connections:

  • MSP-EXP430FR5994-J101 pin GND to HDC2010METER-EVM-J1 pin G
  • MSP-EXP430FR5994-J101 pin 3V3 to HDC2010METER-EVM-J1 pin V

No LEDs lit. This also did not work.

Then I remembered HDC2010METER-EVM has the coin cell providing its voltage.

So I removed the following pin-to-pin connection:

  • MSP-EXP430FR5994-J101 pin 3V3 to HDC2010METER-EVM-J1 pin V

Both LED101 (green) and LED102 (red) are lit. LED102 blinked for a few seconds on power up.

And the LCD screen on HDC2010METER-EVM is off.

This appears to work since I now have CCS in device debugging mode.

The next experiment was to remove the HDC2010METER-EVM coin cell. No change!

It would seem that all you need are the two SBW lines and a common ground reference for this to work. With or without the coin cell?

Can someone confirm these are the correct eZ-FET connections and what I'm seeing is the correct behavior?
