HDC2010METER-EVM: eval kit is malfunctioning

Hello,

I just recently purchased one of these kits. It seemed to work fine out of the box after I inserted a coin cell. 

Now, a week later, it exhibits two behaviors:

1) Most of the time, if I remove the battery and reinsert, it gets stuck on the splash screen. When I press S1 (reset), the display goes dark.

2) Sometimes, if I remove the battery and reinsert slowly, it makes it thru the splash screen and I get temperature/humidity readings but they are not updating. Again a reset causes the display to go dark.

I've tried another coin cell. Both coin cells measure approx. 2.96Vdc

I've also tried reflashing the demo program. The flashing process is successful so long as the display is functioning (either stuck splash screen or stuck measurements).

Any ideas?

    Hi Craig,

    Usually it gets stuck because I2C communication with the HDC2010 has failed in some way. Have you damaged your HDC2010?

    Apparently the HDC2010 has been damaged. This is so strange because this is my second meter. I bought one about a month ago and was transporting back and forth from home to office. Got the second meter (with the failed device) about week and a half ago.Up until today I only handled it to put a battery in.

    So I would conclude that I2C communication is not working for some reason as you state.

    Do I have any options? Can I return it?

    Hi Craig,

    I'm sorry you're having trouble with your HDC2010METER-EVM. I will send you a replacement if you contact me via private message with your shipping address.

    Please be aware that HDC2010 is a DSBGA device which can be vulnerable to rough handling. We also sell the same great humidity sensor in the WSON package as HDC2080. If you're not familiar with DSBGA, this is basically as close as it gets to not having a plastic package around the silicon IC. Landing pads for solder balls are created on the face of the IC, and the backside has a layer of plastic applied. The IC is then cut from the wafer, leaving the edges and face exposed. 

    Are you able to confirm the communication failure by snooping on the I2C bus? I will send a replacement for your troubles regardless, but it would be helpful to better understand your problem for our own quality control.

    Hi Ren,

    I've attached traces of the I2C data and clock lines for the GOOD HDC2010METER-EVM. This device is performing as expected.

    I got no data on the I2C data and clock lines for the MALFUNCTIONING meter. I didn't bother pasting in an image of nothing.
