AWR1843: Power consumption HWA vs DSP

Part Number: AWR1843

Hello,

My customer only uses the DSP in their application for its ease of programming. They are now looking at reducing the power consumption of their application and wonder how much power saving they would gain by moving tasks like windowing and FFT on the HWA.

Do we have any figure that compares the DSP and HWA power? Thank you.

Best regards,
François.

  • Hello François,

Let me consult the design team and I will get back to you shortly.

    Thankyou for your patience.

  • Hi François,

The Time taken by DSP to compute FFT and Windowing while running @ 600MHz is around 1.93us, while for the HWA, it is 1.6us while running at 200MHz.  So, HWA architecture, being specifically built for radar applications, is efficient and can finish the same task in lesser time even running at 1/3rd speed which is causing significant power savings.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hello Ichita,

Thank you for your answer, but I need to understand the power consumed by the HWA compared to the DSP because my customer has an aggressive power objective.Although we expect the HWA to be more power-efficient than the C674x DSP, there is some effort migrating their algorithm from floating point to fixed point while maintaining the performance of the signal chain.

Do you know how much additional power we see on the 1.2V digital rail when the HWA performs some FFT compared to it being idle? I take estimates if you do not have measurements. I am also interested if you have figures for the DSP, Thanks again.

    Best regards,
    François.

  • Hi François,

There's almost a 200mW difference in power when the DSP is idle vs when it's performing FFT operation, whereas in case of HWA, it's close to ~170mW.

    Ishita

  • Hello Ishita,

Thank you, that's useful information. So we save power with the HWA both because it is faster than the DSP and consumes 15% less power when performing an FFT. I will close this case.

    Best regards,
    François.
