AWR2243: mmWave Radar

Part Number: AWR2243
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: IWR1443BOOST, DCA1000EVM, IWR1642BOOST, IWR1443, IWR1642

Hello,

I have purchased the DCA1000EVM, IWR1642BOOST and IWR1443BOOST kits to prototype some proximity measurements at close range (less than a meter). Yesterday, I received a TI news letter in regards to a second generation mmWave chip, AWR2243 that has similar naming to what I've considered. Could you brief me on the similarities and differences between these devices and let me know if I should be considering the AWR2243 as well in my research and development.

The reason I selected both IWR1642 and IWR1443 was due to the application examples available from TI for short range proximity. One example used the on-board DSP and the other did not. The chip will ultimately be interfaced to an FPGA for post processing but an on board DSP could be helpful.

There seems to be a lot of similarity between the radio architectures of all three devices and variations in peripherals. Some assistance on narrowing down the improvements for the 2nd generation chip will be helpful.

Thanks,

Alicia

  • Hello Alicia,

AWR2243 has 2nd Gen of RF front end which is mainly proficient for long-range or cascade applications.

As your project required ultra short range radar (USRR), so for that xWR1443/xWR1642 has enough juice.

  • Hi Jitendra,

    Thank you for answering.

Also, for the AWR2243 it looks like the LVDS/CSI-2 interface was replaced with CSI-2 only. I know this protocol is part of the MIPI camera interface and some CPLD/FPGA devices have built in CSI-2 blocks but not all devices have this. Does TI document the interface requirements for CSI-2 on their chips for implementation in VHDL/Verilog or is that up to the end user to acquire the documentation through the MIPI/CSI-2 Alliance?

What recommendations do you have for capturing the sensor data to an FPGA such as Intel Cyclone V GT or Intel Cyclone 10 GT devices with high speed hardened transceivers.

  • Hello Alicia,

AWR2243 has both of the interface LVDS & CSI-2. But LVDS is mainly for debug purposes not recommend to use for production.

We provide the documentation about all the CSI-2 line and detail of it in the datasheet which you can refer. But implementation info FPGA (VHDL/Verilog) is out of scope from this document.

We recommend to use TDA2x/ TDA3x host processor to capture the raw data over CSI-2 interface. I can't comment on other FPGA devices.
