IWR6843: Outdoor people counting in streets/city center

Dear Team,

I had proposed to use mmWave radar sensors to count people outdoors in streets to one of the municipalities of Netherlands. They have approved our proposal because of security purpose. Presently they have WifI tracking which is no more allowed because of privacy concerns.

So, municipality was looking for solutions for people counting with utmost privacy concern and completely anonymous. We proposed them mmWave technology and they are happy to take it further for pilot testing. They have given us approval to test 9 sensors across 3 streets for outdoor people counting.

So, we have started designing the architecture and the various components of our embedded system. The core of the design is the mmWave radar sensor design. It will be a big project if our pilot phase is a success.

We need TI's app team's expertise to help us from the start itself right from the design phase of this project so that we have great success in the pilot phase. Please help me to connect with TI engineers working in the mmWave sensor technology. It will be great if we get an opportunity to present the use case and its requirement to the technical engineers so that they will better understand our use case and deployment environment and will better be able to guide us.

Please recommend me the suitable IWR radar sensor EVM board which I will purchase for prototyping the requirement of my customer (Long Range People Detection).

Accordingly I will proceed ahead in buying it and getting hands-on-work with it.

Thank you for the links. Below I have attached 2 photos of the streets where we will install multiple mmWave radar sensors for outdoor people counting. I need help to calculate how many radar sensors I need to deploy at a height of 9-14 feet above ground so as to cover the entire street and what should be the separation distance between 2 consecutive sensors ?

Another doubt is that within the field-of-view(FoV) of a particular radar sensor how many maximum people it can count? As of now our customer is only interested in people counting. People tracking is of no interest to them.

Hi Sritam,

Typically we can count 1 person per square meter.Sensor separation will depend on the configuration you use - this will effect range, our default configuration is for 50 meters but this can be decreased to get better range resolution. You won't need to worry about interference from other mmWave devices.

Thank you for the valuable information. I will order the IWR6843ISK along with ICBOOST today. My hands-on with it will give me more insight and understanding.

We are targeting to use an ARM based Wireless MCU to understand the data received from the radar sensor and to finally compute the number of people and transfer that data wirelessly to the cloud.

I read one of the documents released by TI and it says that I can achieve up to 4.8cm (short range configuration) and 12cm (medium range configuration) and I can achieve till 3 persons per square meter as shown below. I think the default configuration is long range which is 50 meters. Is my understanding correct? Please help in this.

We are planning to interface an ARM based wireless MCU to the output of the ARM Cortex R4F which is integrated into the IWR6843 on-chip sensor as shown below:

My question is:

Does an ARM Cortex-M4 or higher based MCU capable of interpreting the data output of the IWR6843 radar chip (ARM Cortex R4F as shown above) in order to count people? Or do I need to use a PC or Laptop (intel based) in order to interpret the data output of the IWR6843 radar chip in order to count people?

Hi Sritam,

The tracker returns a count of people as equal to the number of tracks.This is done on device. You may need to implement additional processing to improve accuracy for your use case.

Anyways, we have multiple counting demos, the one you are showing data for is the indoor people counting demo, call "Sense and Direct: HVAC Control" on TI Resource explorer. This demo is designed to track up to 8 people in an indoor environment. For outdoor environments where long range is needed, we have "Long Range People Detection", with default chirp of 50 meters (configurable).
