PGA411-Q1: Overriding the exciter disabling faults

Hi,

With the default device configuration, all the faults are enabled (not masked) and I want to keep it that way. Consider, the device reports faults that disable exciter and enters the FAULT state.

If it is required to re-enable the exciter using the override bits (ENEXTUV, ENINFAULT, ENBISTF, or ENIOFAULT), will it take effect in FAULT state?

How to safely switch-on the exciter and test for the presence of faults?

  • Hi Vijay,

    We don't recommend that you override the faults when the device has reported as fault. In such scenarios please read the faults and try to address the fault. The fault clears itself when the device operates normally. 

    Turning on the exciter during fault by overriding could result in damage especially if its shorted. So the recommendation is to read the fault and address the fault by fixing the failures.

    Thanks for your reply.

    One of the customer's requirements of fault state handling is to attempt twice to re-enable the exciter by putting the device into the NORMAL state, with a 500ms delay between the attempts, before declaring a permanent fault (without overriding any fault). What are the negative effects of this approach?

  • The approach is OK. Thermal shorts needs to be kept in mind while excersing such procedure. if you have an exciter short there could be excessive current flowing. The PGA411 will indicate a short and the concern can be while polling data the excessive current can damage the board and the exciter. A quick action needs to be taken during shorts fault detection.
