PGA460: Ultrasonic Distance Sensor

Part Number: PGA460

Hi Team,

A customer wants to develop ultrasonic distance sensor with a wide field of view (~180deg) and capable of detecting objects in the near field (0.1 - 50cm) of the sensors. He plans to use 1 transmitter and 2-3 receivers. Is PGA460 suitable for this application? If not, do we have an ultrasonic device that is capable of distance measurement of 0.1 - 50cm?

Regards,

Danilo

  • Hi Danilo,

Yes, the PGA460 can support the customer's described use-case. Regarding the 2-3 receivers, do they intend on:

    1. multiplexing multiple receivers onto a single PGA460 receiver? If so, see the following E2E discussion on multiplexing with the PGA460 at https://e2e.ti.com/support/sensors/f/1023/t/603257. The only downside is that the transmitter will need to burst once for every receiver, meaning 2-3 bursts for a complete "single" measurement of the FOV.
    2. node-sharing all 2-3 receivers at the receiver simultaneously? This does not require any additional circuitry, but will prevent the user for distinguishing with receiver saw the object. The node-sharing approach works great in a binary application (i.e. is something in the general FOV or not?)
    3. use independent PGA460 modules per receiver? This enables the fastest recording since a single transmit cycle will allow all receivers to capture the echo simultaneously and all also allow the user to determine which transducer saw what.

Most transducers can only transmit with a field of view up to 120, so it is likely they will need two emitters for improved coverage, unless the customer will first attempt the multi-receiver network to enable 180deg coverage with a single emitter. They can see a list of transducer part numbers with their FOV specification in the PGA460 Transducer & Transformer Listing.
