HDC2080: Cutout Dimension for HDC2080

Part Number: HDC2080
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: HDC2010, , BP-BASSENSORSMKII

Hi Team,

Our customer needs some info about design guidelines of HDC2080. Its datasheet recommends to give cutouts surrounding the sensor. But it lacks in the details about that recommended cutout dimensions. Can you us guide on this?

Thanks in advance!

Kind Regards,

Jejomar

  • Hi Jejomar,

The cutout dimensions will depend somewhat on their selected design rules and PCB fabrication capability. The actual dimensions don't matter as much as the thermal isolation and reduced thermal mass from the cutout. In general they want just enough space for all their traces, the HDC2080, and a bypass capacitor.

If they would like to see some implementations we've done they can look at the HDC2010METER-EVM (has the HDC2010), or the BP-BASSENSORSMKII Boosterpack  (has the HDC2080). The HDC2080EVM breakaway portion can also be used as an example for board size.

  • Hello Brandon,

Thank you for your response. The BP-BASSENSORSMKII seems to be indeed a good reference for the cutout.  As the cutout will be used by our customer for thermal isolation, they are using the sensor in less populated area of PCB and there would an enough clearance surrounding the sensor. Would the cutout still be necessary in this case? Or can they avoid it?

    Kind Regards,

    Jejomar

  • Hi Jejomar,

I would still recommend the cutout because of the benefit to thermal response time.

They are not just isolating the HDC2080 from other devices, but also from the bulk of the PCB.
