OPT3101EVM: System optimization for short range up to 1.5m

Part Number: OPT3101EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OPT3101,

I would like to build system to measure ball position (3 seenors at characteristic points:dots, arrows, brak point)  on bowling alley.
Because off ball speed  I need to work with 1kHz sampling and more.

OPT3101 looks promising.

I found information that OPT3101EVM is optimized for mid-long range.
What I should pay attention to to get the best results for short range (from 15cm to 150cm)?

The main emphasis is on measurement stability rather than absolute accuracy.

Any advice?

  • Hi Jaroslaw,

I would advise taking a look through our documentation. https://e2e.ti.com/support/sensors/f/1023/t/815766

The system design guide has a section on component selection.

LED to photodiode spacing is a consideration for short range accuracy as well as component selection. Please refer to 4.2.2.1 Determination of Photodiode FoV as well as surrounding sections in the system design guide.

I assume by stability you mean relative accuracy. There are a number of factors to consider for accuracy and these are covered in the docs. Calibrations and signal to noise and crosstalk ratio will effect absolute accuracy as well as relative accuracy. You would want to consider the relative accuracy as the received signal level gets low as well as across calibration parameters such as temp.

Since you are trying to measure a ball you would need to consider how much of the field of view the ball is covering. Ideally you want the ball to cover all of the field of view for it's full range of motion to maximize the received signal - if you are able to do this and have good calibration you should be able to get good performance in your given range. You can experiment with the EVM as well to get an idea, but keep in mind the EVM optics and field of view and how much the ball is covering this field of view.

OPT3101 can report data up to 4ksps.

    Best,

    Alex
