IWR6843AOP: does wide-range FOV involve any trade-offs with other radar parameters

Part Number: IWR6843AOP

When comparing the IWR6843AOP, which has a FOV of 130deg in both azimuth and elevation, to the AWR models which seem to have a narrower field of view, are there any trade-offs to be considered that come along with the wider FOV? I understand that the operating band has an impact on radar parameters, but apart from that, are any parameters impacted by the FOV itself (eg. accuracy, resolution, and/or noise sensitivity)?

  • Hello Ryan Sarver,

Your question is bit open ended:

You could read white paper: "How antenna-on-package design simplifies mmWave sensing in buildings and factories" https://www.ti.com/lit/wp/spry334a/spry334a.pdf

Field of view is mainly decided by the Antenna. There are PCB based antenna where we get higher antenna gain by incorporating multiple antenna element which reduces field of view, but provides higher power in the intended direction. However with wide field of view trade-off is board size, to get higher antenna gain higher PCB area would be utilized. Customer could have choice of PCB material with performance/cost trade-offs.

On the Antenna on package, size of the package is very limited, hence on chip antennas are limited in terms of antenna gain. Hence it limits max distance one could see as compared to higher antenna on PCB.

Also some of these are application specific, i.e. for Automotive applications ground reflections could cause multi path ghost objects, Hence having higher antenna gain/narrower elevation field of view would reduce some of these effects.
