TUSS4470: TUSS4470 Transducer output drive

Hi,

Greetings!

I need to drive a high power ultrasonic transducer (Yet to choose the transducer).

From what it appears to me, that  the TUSS4470 is right choice ?

In this regard, I assume that a Full Bridge drive stage might be necessary.

If so, is that possible with the TUSS4470 ?

If not, what else do you suggest ?

  • Hi Manu,

    Correct, the TUSS4470 is the device I would recommend for customizing your driver power capability. The internal H-bridge direct driver can be used with up to 36V, or the device can be used in pre-drive mode to drive external FETs, enabling the use of an external drive circuit. Depending on your transducer selection, the TUSS4440 may also be a good option. It has a transformer drive capable of up to 360V and 500mA.

    Thanks for your comments.

    Currently, we need to experiment a bit. I do not have much experience into ultrasound;

    I have been told that we "probably might" need a frequency of about 500 - 800kHz.

    That's why I think we need to do some experiments to determine the requirements.

    Due to the frequency limitation, I thought the TUS4470 might be a better option.

    But I am not really sure we need to be in the 500kHz range in the first place.

    Does either of the BOOSTXL boards come with any transducer along ?

    An unrelated question however; What transducers would you suggest/recommend ?

    Both the BOOSTXL-TUSS4440 and BOOSTXL-TUSS4470 come with the PUI Audio UTR-1440K-TT-R 40kHz closed top transducer. 

    If you can tell me more about your application (transmission medium, min/max range, field of view requirement, etc.) I would be happy to help you select a transducer. 

    To get started on your own, you can also find a list of TI recommended transducers on the BOOSTXL-TUSS4470 product page just below the product description: "Step 4: Download our recommended transducer and transformer listing ".

    This transducer list is for the PGA460 AFE, but you can browse the listed manufacturer's websites for higher frequency options. 

    To learn more about transducer characteristics and ultrasonic basics I would recommend two app notes (each has a section on transducers): TI "Ultrasonic Sensing Basics" and Olympus "Ultrasonic Transducers Technical Notes".

    Thanks for the info. We are trying to do the following independent experiments:

    1. Measure Water/oil level in a tank, the transducer can be kept on top of the tank.

    2. Measure the flow rate of water/oil, or a mixture of both

    3. Measure liquid mixture concentration.

    4. Coalesce oil from a water-oil mixture

    5. Clean surface from oil/water.

    The field of view, range, power and frequency of operation are things that we

    need to empirically conclude.

    For the experiments, if we can avoid a transformer (to keep things simpler,

    due to the wider variety of trials) that would be a good thing. The H bridge came

    as an alternative thought. But in the real world, once we have things settled,

    we could move on to a transformer based solution.

    Flow metering has not been well tested with the TUSS4470 yet, so if you have trouble with that application there is also the MSP430FR6043 which has a built in AFE and is optimized for flow metering applications. 

    I'd also like to mention that there is the option to use the TUSS4470 to drive an external. higher voltage H-bridge inverter, if you need to use a higher frequency transducer than is possible with the TUSS4470 in pre-driver mode with an external transformer. 

    I recommend this app note to help you navigate the different hardware and software parameters that can be tweaked to optimize for your experiments: SLAA732

    Thanks. I see that flow metering is better handled with some additional software overhead,

    the MSP43FR6043 or 6047 makes much sense.

    Do you mean to suggest that, for higher frequencies, the transformer is better than using an H bridge inverter setup ?

    I have much to read now, the info what you pointed me to. But before that, any higher  powered transducers you would like to point to me.

  • Hi Manu,

    I was trying to say, as noted in the TUSS4470 datasheet, that transformer drivers may perform poorly at higher frequencies due to the secondary side leakage inductance, and another drive method should be used if using the TUSS4470 in pre-driver operation above 440kHz. 

    Based on the description of your applications, I can suggest looking into these industrial transducers: AudiowellProwave 200LM450
