Hello Guys,
Good day.
Just like to confirm if HDC1080 can be used for soil temperature measurement application or are there better solution than this?
Basically our customer's application will be to measure the temperature of the soil and the cement above the soil including the surrounding air temperature.
Are there better alternative for this?
Thanks in advance!

Dear Art -
The moisture in the soil is water, not water vapor, and is usually measured with a galvanic cell inserted in the soil and then also connected to an ADC (either built in to an MCU or external and connected to MCU).
I would imagine here if someone were to develop similar purpose sensor with HDC device, if it works, would require a little bit of experimentation and development to get results out of it that made sense or matched what is coming out of one of these dedicated moisture sensors.
so the answer here is, not really sure, because I am not aware of anyone internally trying that use case - is this an opportunity use case that you think we should take a look at?
Hello Josh,
Thanks for looking into this.
Just exploring the possibility of using HDC as a temperature sensor for the soil. Are you familiar with any device that could be use on customers application above?
Could you help forward this to that product line if there's an available solution?
Thanks!

I think all that is needed is electrodes, an NPN transistor with a resistor on the emitter, collector connected to VDC, with the signal bac to ADC sampled from between emitter and resistor.
However - the FDC1004 or FDC2212 might be used in this application. I could only find a few E2E posts on it, none which gave exact example, but poster was encouraged to use the FDC1004EVM to test it out.
Moving post to CSPS Applications team at your request.
Thanks Josh!

Hello CSPS Applications team,
Any advise if FDC product lines could be a good fit for the customer application?
Basically our customer's application will be to measure the temperature of the soil and the cement above the soil including the surrounding air temperature.
Thanks in advance!

Hi Art,
FDC is typically used for moisture detection and liquid level sensing. As Josh pointed out your application will require 2 electrodes.
One limitation that needs to be looked at here is the maximum capacitance that can be detected. We dont have a lot lot of info on this and needs to be tested. I would certainly lean more towards FDC1004 as it has the integrated shield and also features option for calibration.
