IWR6843AOP: Max range for people detection

Hi,

I'm evaluating the IWR6843AOP device for a medium range (< 50m) )people detection application . As mentioned here: https://www.ti.com/sensors/mmwave-radar/industrial/applications/applications.html (Table: “Antenna database”)the maximum range for people detection with IWR6843AOP device is 49m. I was trying several configurations and sample projects, but I never get a good result beyond 10m for people detection with the AOP device.

Later I found a statement from TI here in this forum: https://e2e.ti.com/support/sensors/f/1023/p/827984/3065581?tisearch=e2e-sitesearch&keymatch=iwr6843%2520aop%252050%2520meters#3065581. “The AoP device will struggle to detect humans past 20 - 25 meters, due to the antenna design. We recommend the ISK pattern for 50 meter human detection."

Please can someone form TI clarify the maximum detection range for people with the IWR6843AOP device.

For data in the table please see the app note listed under the table. It mentions which board was used for the data and that will tell you the antenna type.

Hi,

just checking this table. No application note is attached here. In this table is clearly stated, that the IWR6843AOPEVM has a max detection range for people detection of 49m.

Maybe I didn’t find the best configuration or example project for the AOP device. But I think the content of this table was evaluated by TI and they have a such a project.

Hi Boris,

Please refer to the following E2E for a discussion about running the Long range people detection and tracking demo on IWR6843AOP EVM.

IWR6843AOP: long_range_people_det_68xx: Use With Different Antenna (ISK=> AOP)

While we have not tested this demo on AOP, this demo should be able to detect at a farther range as it uses TX beamforming.

I will need to check on the source for this table and assumptions made including a particular chirp configuration, beamforming etc.
