LDC1614: Metal detection application

Hello Team,

My Customer is working with an application, which will be installed under a vehicle body to detect the vehicle pass over road lines covered by metal sheets. They wanted to confirm if the LDC1614 and the use of conductive sensing technology are suitable for it. Do we have other solutions we can offer?

Detection is not required to be fast. Only required to be face to face with the metal sheets and the range is 40 cm.

A few questions:

Has the customer specified the details of the metal sheets - dimensions, thickness, material?

Is there a requirement that the application respond to the expected metal sheets, but ignore other metal objects on the road surface?

Thank you for your response.

Actually the metal sheets are the Ground lanes in the driving test yard, they are planning to paint these lanes with magnetic paint or they will mark them with Aluminium Tape.

Simply they need to install sensors under the car body (surrounding all car body from bottom ) to give a signal when any part of these lanes comes under the car premises with accuracy not more than 1 cm .

Regarding your Question about ignoring other objects :

It is not necessary to ignore other objects since the yard is not containing any other metallic objects. But they assume that the sensors should not be confused or affected by the car metallic body itself.

A detail I missed in your initial comments is the distance between the inductor and the metal sheets: will it be 40cm?

Renan,

While our inductive sensors work very well in many applications, the farthest distance they can support to a target is 10cm.
Anything larger than this is not feasible.
