IWR6843: Question about the shield cover info in spracp3a.pdf

Part Number: IWR6843

Hi,

My customer have checked suggestion in 5.3.1 14.4-Ghz Harmonics of application note TI mmWave Radar Device Regulatory Compliance Guide for shield cover. It mentioned that "All RF traces should be at least 2 mm away from shielding cover.".

1. Is the 2mm suggestion only for 14.4-Ghz and its harmonics or all EMI emission?

2. How to get the 2mm suggestion? Using HFSS simulation? Which parameter or theory is it based on?

3. My customer has very limited space for the product and is there any way to reduce the 2mm limitation for the shied/RF trace?

  • Hello Chris,

           Please find my comments below.

    1. Is the 2mm suggestion only for 14.4-Ghz and its harmonics or all EMI emission?

[Chethan] It would help in harmonics and EMI emissions as well, Shield would act as a faraday cage for any radiated emission happening from the board.

    2. How to get the 2mm suggestion? Using HFSS simulation? Which parameter or theory is it based on?

[Chethan] It is based on the HFSS simulation S11, S21 of the RF traces, Main concern is that field from the RF traces should not couple to shield and degrade the S-parameters of the transmission line.

    3. My customer has very limited space for the product and is there any way to reduce the 2mm limitation for the shied/RF trace?

[Chehtan] A generic rule of thumb guideline is provided as a safe option for 2mm for the shield height from the RF traces, However careful 3D EM simulation on the system, this number could be optimized.

    Thanks and regards,

    CHETHAN KUMAR Y.B.
