AWR1642: Beamforming reference in SWRS203B

Part Number: AWR1642
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AWR1843

Hi,

While reading the datasheet for AWR1642 (document ref: SWRS203B-MAY2017-REVISED APRIL 2020), in section 6.3 I came across the highlighted text as below, which confused me.

Could you please confirm this is a typo? If it is not a typo, could you please elaborate further on how beamforming can be achieved on AWR1642? (I was under the impression that beamforming was not supported on AWR1642)

Regards,

Cagri

  • Hi,

AWR1642 Beamforming means that both TX are enabled at the same time. The result is that more energy is transmitted, which results in a longer range.

Note that this does not mean that the TX beams are steered in a direction. This feature is only available on AWR1843.

The AWR1642 SRR demo provides and example of beamforming using AWR1642.

This demo is available in the Automotive Toolbox provided in the TI Resource Explorer

Please also see the associated TI design (read especially the TI Design Guide)

  • Hi Cesar,

    Thank you for your message.

As I understand, I can enable TX1 and TX2 at the same time on AWR1642 if I want to increase the detection range. If I want the beam steering capability, I need to work with AWR1843, which is equipped with analog phase shifters to control each transmit stream individually.

Does TI provide an application note on beam forming and beam steering (similar to the MIMO radar note - SWRA554A) ? I am currently reviewing literature on these concepts but it would help to have a look at TI's insights as well if there is document on it.

    Regards,

    Cagri

  • Hi,

We don't have a single document on beam steering.

The TI Design Beamsteering User Guide provides some information on beam steering

    Thank you

    Cesar
