OPT3004: Using epoxy on sensor surface

I have an application where the sensor will be peeking through a hole in an aluminum housing. The housing needs to be water proof. Is it OK to use a clear epoxy and pour it directly on the sensor to seal the housing? If so does TI have a recommended material?

Hi Rob,

From an optics perspective the epoxy may act as a light pipe and alter the angular response of the sensor so you would want to analyze this to make sure performance is as expected. The optical properties of the epoxy should also be considered such as transparency and color. I would suggest using an optical epoxy or glue that is specific for optical systems.

From a chemical perspective, optical glue has been used with this sensor package in the past. However, it is hard for me to give much more info without knowing the specific chemical that is being used. In general the device packaging is inert and is not known to react or be damaged by these types of compounds.

This looks to be a clear epoxy. If it is rated for optics use then should be good.
