AWR1843: BPM and phase shifter settings in mmWave Studio configuration tool

I have a clarification question.

According to my understanding, the using BPM helps with the SNR. The SNR benefit we get from using N transmit antennas at the same time is equal to 10log(N)

The phase shifters on the other hand enable beam steering.

As the BPMConfig tab in mmWave Studio configuration tool includes both the BPM and the phase shifter settings, there is a relation between these two features as follows:

1 - If we want to use beam steering, we will have to configure the BPM for multiple antennas to achieve simultaneous transmission. (Without simultaneous transmission on multiple transmit antennas, beam steering will not be possible)

2 - It is also possible to disable beam steering and only use BPM for taking advantage of the SNR gain (through concurrent transmission on multiple antennas) as described above.

Can you please confirm my understanding is correct? Please let me know if I am missing any other related critical point here.

    As you have read in the MIMO radar App Note BPM is designed for MIMO applications.

    For beamsteering BPM is not sufficient if one needs to steer the beam at different angles than 180deg. This is the reason why for beamsteering it is needed to have a phase shifter.

    Thank you for your swift response on this.

    It does answer the critical part of my question.

    If you could also provide you insight on why BPM may be used on its own (excluding its role in beamsteering), that will be very helpful. The only reason why BPM seems to be used on its own is the range extension advantage it seems to provide (as there is more power injected into the channel due to the simultaneous use of multiple antennas). At least, that is my understanding and I want to make sure I am not missing anything else here.

    As described in Section 4.2 BPM-MIMO there is SNR increase because there is more power transmitted since all Tx are enabled.
     
    Allowing simultaneous transmission on all the NTX transmitters (while still ensuring perfect separation by use of suitable spatial code) lets users increase the total transmitted power per time slot. This translates to an SNR benefit of 10log10 (NTX).’
