Part Number: IWR6843ISK

We want to decrease FOV of elevation.

1.But I do not kown should we redesign the branches in green block as below.

What is the function of the branches?

2.We want to decrease FOV of elevation through add patches form three to five or seven?

We want to control FOV of elevation from 50 degree to 25 degree,

But we do not konw how to design the patch size of we added.

Can you answer our questions?

Hello user6060721,

1) Those are the structures that provides broadband matching for the antenna ports.

2) This is a antenna design/trade-off question, We will not be able provide designs on E2E forum. At high level you may have to add more elements in the series fed patch array to reduce the field of view in the elevation direction. You may have to size the elements depending upon main lobe and side lobe suppression requirements.

Typically these optimizations are run through 3D EM field solvers based tools.

I also have another question.

IWR6843IS antenna have ground around antenna.

but I read some mmwave antenna design papers,most mmwave antenna design do not have ground around antenna as below.

Can you explain why TI add ground around antenna? Is it to increase the isolation of adjacent antennas or some other reasons?

Yes, it's primarily to improve the isolation between the adjacent pairs. It also helps shielding any aggressor from the surrounding area.

When I simulate antenna of IWR6843ISK, I can not get the same result as demo.

I want to konw the value of Dielectric Constant (ε_r),3.48 or 3.66,or other values?

Hello user6060721,

For the DK and DF please use from Rogers. DK values would be different for different frequency, Hence it would be best to take it from the below Rogers calculator.

Also material stackup and it's property also contributing factor. Please review the stack up information, thickness, metal thickness. surface roughness etc parameters. Port location for the simulations are from at the edge of the package. whole board need to be considered for the simulation.
