MMWCAS-DSP-EVM: Board not Powering

Part Number: MMWCAS-DSP-EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MMWCAS-RF-EVM

Hi Team, Seeking your assistance on this troubleshooting

MMWCAS-DSP-EVM board to use with the MMWCAS-RF-EVM and when powered on, we cannot ping the MMWCAS-DSP-EVM board.

or the RF-EVM and DSP-EVM boards getting the below current draw at 12 V for the functional and non-functional boards at 10 minutes from power-on.

Functional = 1090 mA
Non-Functional = 950 mA

Both you can see that the Ethernet link looks to be operational from the SoC's perspective. Could a fault have developed on the Ethernet Phy IC on the DSP-EVM board (U30) or the TVS diodes (U32/U33)?

Functional:
[ 13.604555] cpsw 48484000.ethernet eth0: Link is Up - 1Gbps/Full - flow control rx/tx
[ 13.612481] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): eth0: link becomes ready

[ 13.894527] cpsw 48484000.ethernet eth0: Link is Up - 1Gbps/Full - flow control rx/tx
[ 13.902461] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): eth0: link becomes ready

Hoping for your inputs on this.

Thank you.

  • Hi,

    The hardware team will review this question and get back to you.

    Thank you

    Cesar

  • Do you get any log after powering on the non-functional board?

    If yes, could you share the full log after boot?

  • Hi Stanley,

    Please see attached file below.

    Thank you.

    Mark

  • From the log, the Ethernet PHY is ready.

    What did you get from "ifconfig"? Was IP address assigned to the board?

  • When they enter 'ifconfig' I get:
    eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 50:51:A9:D4:57:0E

    They don't see the expected ipv4 address of 192.168.33.180 anywhere.

  • Could you provide GMAC_SW STATS registers dump?

    We can see if there is any RX frame received and any CRC error.

  • Hi Stanley,

    Is this something that is accessible through the serial port onto the DSP-EVM board? Or would you have to use a debugger with Code Composer Studio?

    Would it be possible for us to return the board to TI for debug/repair?

    Best regards,

    Peter.

  • Hi Peter,

    You can read any register or memory location in Linux with OMAPCONF utility via command prompt.

    You can find the user guide here. I think the utility is already included in the filesystem.

    github.com/.../omapconf

  • Ignore this post.

  • Hello Stanley,

    Good day.

    I just like to follow-up on this. Does this mean the customer can now proceed with the replacement process? Do they have to return the defective board?

    If they have to return it, can we have the shipping address?

    Customer reach-out to us again regarding returning board to TI for debugging. But if they are approved for replacement just let me know.

    Thanks and regards,

    Art

  • I forgot to ask the customer in the past if they have tried to assign static IP and see if that works.

    Can you check?

  • Hi Stanley,

    I'm now looking at this DSP-EVM board again - I was able to read the below register locations using the omapconf utility, after I had tried to connect using mmWave Studio and tried pinging the board also, looks like no frames RX:

    GOOD_RX_FRAMES = omapconf read 0x48484900 = 00000000

    RX_CRC_ERRORS = omapconf read 0x48484910 = 00000000

    GOOD_TX_FRAMES = omapconf read 0x48484934 = 00000000

  • I've tried assigning a static IP address using the method outlined in Section 11 of the 'mmWave Studio Cascade Users Guide' (page 41) but I'm still getting the same error message when i try to connect to the board using mmWave Studio:

    [17:12:09] Setting up Studio for Cascade started..
    [17:12:09] [RadarAPI]: ar1.SelectCaptureDevice("TDA2XX")

    [17:12:30] Not able to connect with the TDA board. Please check whether the Capture Card is connected to the network!
    [17:12:30] ConnectTDA Failed
    [17:12:30]
    [17:12:30] ***Script completed successfully.***

    When I try to ping the board I don't get a response:

    C:\Users\petel>ping 192.168.33.180

    Pinging 192.168.33.180 with 32 bytes of data:
    Request timed out.
    Request timed out.
    Request timed out.
    Request timed out.

    Ping statistics for 192.168.33.180:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),

    When I try reading the GMAC_SW STATS registers, as I did above, I do now get something when I look at the GOOD_TX_FRAMES register:

    GOOD_RX_FRAMES = omapconf read 0x48484900 = 00000000

    RX_CRC_ERRORS = omapconf read 0x48484910 = 00000000

    GOOD_TX_FRAMES = omapconf read 0x48484934 = 00000100

    Is there anything else I can try or alternatively could we send it back to TI for debug?

  • This board is now working ok - I found that the Ethernet connector on my laptop is a bit unreliable by checking with ipconfig to see if my own IP ver4 address (192.168.33.30) was coming up, when I fiddled around with this a bit it came up and then I was able to ping the board ok and set it up using mmWave Studio. Not sure if this was the only issue or whether the above troubleshooting steps (ensuring correct static IP address is set for instance) helped resolve it but is working anyway, thanks.
