IWR6843: Choosing from multiple mmwave chipsets - IWR68XX, IWR16XX, IWR18XX

Hi Team,

I would like to get your input on what mmwave product is best for the customer.
According to the customer, their requirement is to track people with x,y and z. We would like to track them and get (x,y) position and also know the height of the person. In the website there are labs related to people counting only for IWR6843 and not for other chip series.
They would like to pick a chipset which is tested and calibrated from TI. Also they would like to have demo labs which could be used as is to get started.

They are trying to understand why TI has multiple mmwave chipsets (with different frequency, bandwidth and configurations) to do a similar task.

Hello

Please note that IWR18xx and IWR68xx are devices with identical architecture for digital post processing capabilities but with different RF front end. THis allows users to chose the right frequency bands based on region specific regulations.

Hi Jonathan,

Could you please clarify what specific information is the customer looking for? The reason for having multiple devices, as mentioned in the above response and the referenced posts, has to do with:

1. Different frequency regulations (xWR1xxx family for 76-81GHz and xWR6xxx family for 57-64GHz i.e. ISM band) and their allowed usages across different regions.

2. Increasing digital processing capabilities for different levels of on-device post-processing capability and use cases. For instance, the xWR6443 includes the Cortex R4F and Hardware Accelerator as the digital processing cores for point cloud generation and tracking, while the xWR6843 (and xWR1843) includes, in addition to Cortex R4F and HWA a C674x+ DSP which allows for advanced point cloud processing (Capon Beamforming), tracking and classification to run on the device, which is why it is used in for people counting applications.

Upon sharing this with our customer, here's the information I got from the customer:

They would like to know which chipset is suitable if they are planning to use in the USA geography. The main aim of their solution is to perform people tracking. They need to know a particular person's location (x,y coordinates) and the height of that person (z coordinate). Please suggest.

IWR6843, which operates in the ISM band (60-64GHz) is better suited for USA as this band is more open for non-automotive applications. However, we always recommend that customers do their own due diligence to understand the regulatory requirements for their target region. Please refer to the following thread for some more information:
