AWR1642BOOST: Can it differentiate between ice and water?

Part Number: AWR1642BOOST

I am looking for a microwave sensor which can be used to remotely detect rain. I need the sensor to differentiate between ice and water (rain) as well. I wonder if AWR1642BOOST is a good choice for my application. I would also appreciate if I can have some suggestion on similar sensing modules.

It is worth mentioning that the sensor’s distance from the surface should be nearly 2 meters and I want the sensor to detect water in different sizes.

Can you please help us understand the end application for which you intend to use the mmWave device- this will allow us to direct your question to right experts.

Regarding the query:

This would boil down to how the specific material responds to Electro magnetic waves of frequency band for the device. We have not done a comparison and detection with specific material we have tried few other materials which you can see in the Tirex experiments in industrail toolbox.

We encourage you to check available research based on permittivity and dielectric value assessment for material you are interested in or if you have our EVM/device handy try the detection and comparison the results for these materials. For the kind of detection you are trying to implement you may want to see the delta for with and without material of interest and establish a correlation for detection/identification.

I am using the sensor in an academic research project. The aim of the project is detecting ice and water using mm-Wave sensors.
