Ultrasound frequency shift measurement

Hi,

I am searching for an ultrasound sensor where the shift in frequency(due to doppler effect) can be measured at the receiver. Also the transmitter frequency needs to be modified for experiments.

Is there any sensor from TI which can be used for this purpose?

Hi Akshaya A,

The TUSS4470 has a zero crossing feature that continuously monitors the incoming echo frequency. If the object is approaching the sensor, the zero-crossing frequency will increase, while an object leaving will cause the zero-crossing frequency to decease. The “Monitor Changes to Environment” column of the table in the below link has more info on this:

The frequency of the drive clock at the TUSS4470’s IO1 and IO2 pins is used as the burst frequency. Therefore, you can adjust the transmit burst frequency by adjusting the frequency at the IO1 and IO2 pins.

Hi Mekre,

Thanks for the information.

I saw in the table in this link that TDC1000 can also be used to measure Zero crossing . Can TDC1000 be used to determine the received echo frequency? Please clarify.

Hi Akshaya,

We recommend the TUSS4470 here over the TDC1000 because of the TUSS4470’s increased dynamic range. Are you interesting this device for a gas/water flow application or some other type of application?

Hi Mekre,

This is not for gas/water flow application. I was interested in TDC1000 as it supported a wide range of transducer frequencies(31.25kHz to 4MHz) which could help for performing experiments.

Hi Akshaya,

The TDC1000 also isn’t the best fit for Doppler functionality, as is explained here:

The TUSS4470 still covers a wide range of frequencies, so I’d still recommend this device.
