HDC1080: Technical Information / technology

Part Number: HDC1080

Hi Guys,

as my knowledge in electrical engineering or computer science is limited, as well as my interest as a civil engineer lie more in the method of measuring the relative humidity, i would like to know what kind of sensor the HDC1080 is? I'm refering to the measurement method: Is it aadsorption hygrometer, a dew point hygrometer or ...? As i'm currently working with five of these on my master thesis, the knowledge about what the sensor is actually doing is kind of essential. Sadly i wasn't able to find any date concerning this topic on the website. Hope someone can help me out.

Thank you in advance!
Andi

  • Hi Andreas,

    Welcome to the E2E forums!

The HDC1080 is actually a capacitive hygrometer (this document discusses our humidity sensing technology briefly: Humidity Sensors (snaa318)).

The open window on the top of the HDC1080 device contains a dielectric polymer that allows atmospheric moisture to diffuse into it. A change of moisture in the polymer equates to a change of capacitance which we measure. Along with the temperature measurement from the integrated temp sensor, this information is enough to calculate the relative humidity of the surrounding air.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

    Best Regards,
