DCA1000EVM: DCA1000 Power With mmWaveICBoost and xWR6843

Part Number: DCA1000EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: IWR6843ISK

I have a DCA100EVM connected to a IWR6843ISK and all is working. I then introduce the MMWAVEBOOST using the same 5V supply, but since then the 5V supply LED on the DCA is blown.  If I connect the xWR6843 to the mmWaave Boost or the DCA1000 individually all seems to work okay, but if I put all three boards together it seems that there are power issues.

Have I blown something, or not wiring correctly.  I am using the same 5V supply for both PCBs.

  • HI, Keith:

Please use the attached slides to check the switch settings on the boards.

  • Thank you so much for this response it is really useful.  Do you believe that setting the DIP switches up incorrectly would cause physical damage though.  As stated, the LED on the DCA1000 blew off the board completely.  I am concerned that other damage may have been caused, which has not surfaced yet.

I see from the document that the DCA1000 and the mmWaveBoost cards are both powered with 5V.  I used the same supply.  Is this correct, or should they have isolated supplies?

  • You can use the power the DCA1000 card from mmWaveBoost, I am doing that all the time.  I have wrong switch setting before and did not cause any problem to DCA1000.  Which switch setting have you set wrong?

Now, if you connect back to your original working setup, i.e., a DCA100EVM connected to a IWR6843ISK, is it still working?

  • Everything seems to work, except of course the power LED, which is now missing as it was blown off the DCA1000 board.  I have only tried the DCA & xWR68431SK, and the mmWaveBoost & xWR6843ISK as pairs.  I have not enough confidence yet to build all three together again.  I would like to know what caused the issue in the first place, but it may be that I will never know.

  • HI, Keith:

Do you mean the LED light does not light when power is on even DCA1000 + EVM works fine?   And can you also confirm that LED light was working before you connect DCA1000 + ICBOOST + xWR6843ISK?  And you are not sure what cause the LED light to stop functioning, right?

In that case, I would recommend you to go on with the rest of the data capture procedure.  At the same time, I will consult with a hardware engineer.

Please keep me updated on your capture effort.

  • Hi Zigang, the LED literally blew up and is no longer physically on the board. This is the route of the problem.  When I applied power to both the DCA and Boost PCBs this happened; I heard a pop and there was a smell of burning electronics.  The LED blew up, but since then everything seems to work but I have only powered up DCA with the IWR, or the Boost with IWR.  I have not connected all three boards again yet.

  • HI, Keith:

Thanks for the description.  If the DCA1000 still works well with IWR even after the LED blew up, It should also works with ICBOOST with IWR.
