PGA460: TDC1000 ./. PGA460

Part Number: PGA460
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TDC1000, TUSS4470

Hey,

I am working on a gas concentration sensor, which uses a supersonic distance measurement system to determine the speed of sound depending to the gas concentration.
The distance is fix an about 100mm and the estimated speed of sound is lower than that of normal air.

Because of the better availibility of 40kHz transducers, i would prefer this frequency. But for better resolution it should be possible to extend the range up to many 100kHz.

From an older post from Kristin Jones i have learned, the PGA460 is better for air coppling applications.

I first planned to use the TDC1000, but with this post i probably switch over to the PGA460.

Which device would you recommend for my application?

Best regards,

 Thomas Orzechowski

  • Hi Thomas,

You are correct that the PGA460 will perform better than the TDC1000 here. Although the TDC1000 is specified for 31kHz - 4MHz, it is much better suited to liquid and solid coupled ToF applications in the 1-4MHz frequency range. The PGA460 and likewise the TUSS4470, have much higher gain and range in gas coupled applications.

    Regards,

    Gabriel

  • Hi Gabriel,

    thanks for your response.

I think, i will start with an PGA460 design (together with an existing ARM-Cortex CPU) and check the ease of implementation. The most important aspect of the realisation is the resolution together with short distances.

In the moment i check the usibility of the DECPL pin and the use of dedicated devices for transmitting and receiving with only one PGA460.

    Best Regards,

    Thomas
