LDC0851: A hole in LSENSE board of EVM and piece-to-piece variation effect

Genius 17295 points
Part Number: LDC0851

Hello,

I have some questions for LDC0851.

1
In LDC0851 EVM, there is a hole in the center of LSENSE board.
Does it have any special reason to have the hole?

2.
The switching threshold may drift by piece-to-piece variation of LDC0851 itself, PCB coil value and capacitance value and power supply voltage etc/.
Then they would like to know how much does piece-to-piece variation of LDC0851 parameters affect to the switching threshold drift.
Do you have any data?
Or doesn’t piece-to-piece variation of LDC0851 significantly affect to it?

Regards,
Oba

  • Hi Oba,

    Thank you for your post.

Unfortunately, I am not aware of a special reason that the LDC0851EVM has a hole in the middle of the sensor PCB. It may be to make it easier to mount the coil to a target, but this is speculation. I may be able to reach out to previous engineers for a more definitive answer.

The Inductive Sensing Design Calculator Tool has a design space for the LDC0851, including calculated sensor characteristics with different input parameters. Additionally, section 7.8 – Typical Characteristics of the LDC0851 datasheet has several figures that illustrate the relationship between switching distance and other components.

    Best regards,

  • Hello Nicole,

    Thanks for your reply.

Regarding the hole in the EVM, I understand that it may not has any special reason .
    Thank you.

Regarding the 2nd question, I know datasheet has some typical characteristic, but what my customer would like to know is effect of its piece-to-piece variation.
    Don't you have anything?

    Regards,
    Oba

  • Hi Oba,

I have received confirmation that the hole in the LDC0851EVM sensor is for attaching various mechanical structures, notably in applications such as rotary encoding.

As with all LDC devices, the LDC0851 is very sensitive to system-level design and many characteristics are heavily dependent on the design of the coil. Additionally, only the minimum and maximum specifications in the datasheet can be guaranteed. As such, the typical specifications cannot be guaranteed or elaborated on outside of what is listed in the datasheet.

    Best regards,

    Nicole
