AWR2243: AWR2243 booting fail issue.

I am stuck on boot problem.

I want for you to tell me what I can try more else. (debugging way, checking point.. etc.)

1. SW : PROCESSOR_SDK_VISION_03_08_00_00

2. Chip : AWR2243 (XA2243PBGABL)

[History]

1. AWR1243 4chip cascade board (no boot problem with Vision SDK 3.8) => Some problem at advance frame/beamforming

2. Replace AWR1243 with AWR2243 on same board

3. RFIC boot fail

4. change mmWave_dfp as mmwave_dfp_02_02_02_01

5. Apply AWR2x patch (e2e.ti.com/.../907162)

6. Same RFIC boot fail

7. Enable mmWave log

=> I can find that rlDevicePowerOn is done, but AWR2243 does not give RL_MSS_POWERUP_COMPLETE async msg.

  • Hello Minsung,

    As the Radar-SDK or Vision-SDK currently doesn't support AWR2243 at the software level, you would need to use different firmware image (xwr22xx_metaImage) from the mmWave DFP which I see you're using. 

    But in case you have AWR2243 ES1.0 Cascade board, you would need to use mmwave DFP 02_02_00_03 and mmwave DFP 02_02_02_01 only if you have AWR2243 ES1.1

    I tried with mmwave DFP 02_02_00_03 but the symptom is same.

    Regarding other AWR2243 issue threads, those are the patch of Firmware downloading problem.

    In my case, the power-on is failed due to no response from AWR2243.

    (as you know that the power-on step is a prior to download Firmware)

    Could you show me the other way?

  • Hi Minsung,

    Looks like AWR2243 device itself is not powering on. Could you check the hardware connection on your board that all the four power lines are connected to AWR device and SPI+HostIRQ lines are connected to Host processor.

    Do you get HostIRQ high as soon as device is powered on from Host?

    Try to probe on SPI and HostIRQ to check the hardware status.

    We checked the board again and it seems no problem in there.

    I read the status of IRQ within the power-on wait routine and It is continuously shown as 0.

    (too hard to make hardware jumper on IRQ pin.. so read status by S/W)

    Regarding SPI communication pins, I believe that those are checked within Power On routine.

    If not, below message will not be shown. Am I right?

    This message Host receives over SPI as soon as Host power on (out of nReset) the AWR device. Could you confirm if this code snippet ran fine and if yes then read that SPI message and post to us.

    Please provide the clear pictures of exact execution status of host application. And may be you need to probe on SPI+HostIRQ lines (and capture log) at the device bootup.

    I need  to know if initial boot up is blocked or later to that it got some issue.

    As per log, looks like HostIRQ is not going high at all. Is this pin for Master device out of cascade setup?

    That may be due to reset or powerup of Master device is not done properly. If AWR1243 board was working fine but not AWR2243 then I would recommend you to check the AWR2243 board connection if all the nReset, HostIRQ+SPI and other power lines to Master/slave are at right state? Try to probe those lines and check status as TDA application executes.

    Could you check firstly that slave device is out of reset and powered on, please probe to the HW lines of Slave device.

    I have some questions about the role of nERROR_OUT pin.

    I'd like to know which issues make nERROR_OUT low exactly.

    1. Could you explain the exact role of nERROR_OUT pin?

    In the same state with mentioned by Minsung, nERROR LED suddenly turned on.

    Precisely speaking, nERROR LED turned on after the boot-up was succeeded at master AWR2243 and when trying to boot one of slave AWR2243.

    The LED circuit is same as Ti's AWRx243 cascade reference design.

    All nERROR_OUT pins from each AWR2243 are in same net (shorted, same as your reference design),

    so I cannot figure out which AWR2243 says "I have error" when the nERROR LED turned on. 

    2. Please guide us about these booting issues.

    In addition, there is no problem at the HW lines (power, nRST, SPI, etc..) you mentioned.

    Accurately connected and DC voltages are fine.

    As Ishita mentioned before that Processor SDK doesn't officially support AWR2243 cascade. Although with required code change that support can be brought to existing Processor SDK (v3.8+).

    I hope that you have taken those code changes in.  Here is the old thread discussing the migration of Processor SDK to AWR2243 cascade, which you can refer for this migration (if you haven't done already)

    Now if you have AWR2243 ES1.0 (Engineering) then the latest DFP version for that silicon sample is DFP 2.2.0.3

    But if it AWR2243 ES1.1 (production) then it requires DFP 2.2.2.1

    And ES1.1 got a slight change in boot sequence compare to ES1.0 which is explained in 'C:\ti\mmwave_dfp_02_02_01_00\docs\mmwave_dfp_user_guide.pdf' (section 9.2) or in the C:\ti\mmwave_dfp_02_02_01_00\ti\example\mmWaveLink_SingleChip_Example\mmw_example.c (DFP example).

    Thus, let's first make sure that above code changes are in place. As slave can be powered on only after master is powered up with few configurations are done. (follow above flow diagram from DFP user guide).

    nError Out may be active in case of AWR2243 ES1.0 which is due to unepxected (but known) MSS fault in the device at power on which effectively generate the MSS CPU fault (RL_DEV_AE_MSS_CAPUFAULT_SB) as well to Host. This fault async-event is one time generated at bootup and requested to ignore at the Host end. Thus nErrorOut also needs to be ignored at bootup of AWR2243 ES1.0.

    When I tried

     >> DFP2.2.0.3, BSS download succeeded on Master chip.

    And I checked Errata document and double checked Chip label.

    It is "XA2243PBGABL / 583 (without A)"

    So current ES1.0 patch is proper one.

  • Did you check Firmware version it loaded to the Master device?

    Please match those version values provided in the DFP release note (c:\ti\mmwave_dfp_02_02_00_03\docs\mmwave_dfp_release_notes.pdf)

    This will confirm that loaded firmware image is executing properly, it is still not running from device's ROM.
