LDCCOILEVM: Need to select sensor capacitor when using H coil with LDC1101

Part Number: LDCCOILEVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LDC1101

Dear Community,

I have a LDC1101 EVM evaluation board. I have tested it with the default sensor on board which is 14mm diameter. I have a LDCCOILEVM and I want to use coil H and I sensor with the board. I need to know the value of the capacitor that  I should use with these.

  • The LDCCOILEVM has a user's guide that gives plots of  L, Rs and Q versus frequency for the coils on the EVM.
The self-resonant frequency is also given.

That info, and the target resonant frequency, will allow you to calculate a ball-park value for the capacitance.
The calculated value will probably have to be adjusted in your implementation since parasitic R's, L's , and C's can impact results.

You can find the user's guide at www.ti.com/.../snou136.pdf

  • Thanks John.

I have few more queries on it. I am going to sense aluminium plate with the LDC1101 EVM board. I have to sense it from 1 inch distance which is 25.4 mm. I want to use the coil H for this application. I have gone through the manual. What I understood is I have to select a value from the chart named Ti1 in my attachment. I will get L and frequency value. Then I have to put those values to LDC Tools calculator (www.ti.com/.../slyc137) to find C_sensor  (TI2 image). Then I have to check whether these selections make other parameters in range (TI3 image). Is this the correct approach?

Please also give me a calculation if I choose the 390pf capacitor and the H coil having specification: 46mm, 50 turns, 6mil trace, 6mil spacing, 2 layers. Will the 390pf capacitor will work for this coil. If not, what are the reasons? This way, I will know exactly how to proceed for custom coils. I have about 19 different coils that I can use from LDCCOILEVM.

  • What is your desired resonant frequency and Q?
What are the estimated parasitic resistance, inductance and capacitance of the connections between the deivce and coil?
