Acoustic Sensor

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1278EVM-PDK, TLV320ADC6140, ADS1278, TMS320C5535

Good afternoon, I want the ADS1278EVM-PDK ADC chip to talk to the latest DSP Evaluation Board that replaces the TMDX5535EZDSP C5535/C5545 eZdsp USB Stick Development Kit. I am trying to use that ADC chip or something similar, which supports integration with a DSP.

Application wise, I want this hardware design for an acoustic sensor. My main goal is to feed in Analog MEMS microphone signals to an ADC chip on some type of eval board with at least 8 acoustic channels, and integrate a DSP for processing. If you have a single board solution that would be great.

  • Hello,

Would you consider a 2-chip Audio ADC solution?  The TLV320ADC6140 is a high-performance 4-channel Audio ADC and two of them are still about the same size as the ADS1278.  All 8 channels from the two ADCs can be synchronized together and will be simultaneously sampled similar to the ADS1278.

Here's an application note describing using two (or more) of them in one system:

  • It may resolve the issue, but why would I use 2 of the TLV320ADC6140 (which implies I will eventually need 2 chips) instead of 1 ADS1278EVM-PDK (which implies I will eventually only need 1 chip)? Also, I am interested in interfacing this to a DSP.

More specifically, I want this hardware design for an acoustic sensor. My main goal is to feed in Analog MEMS microphone signals to an ADC chip sampling at no less than 30kHz per channel and 16 to 24 bits on some type of eval board with at least 6 acoustic channels.

I need a DSP chip at least as fast as the Texas Instruments: TMS320C5535 Fixed-Point Digital Signal Processor. What evaluation board would you recommend?

If you have a single board solution that would be great.

  • Hello,

The ADS1278EVM-PDK is a good option too if you want all 8 channels in one IC.  You'd mentioned analog MEMs microphones though and there's a lot of very useful features (gain/phase calibration, biquads, AGC/DRE, etc.) that are often desired in these systems that are present in our Audio ADC portfolio, like the TLV320ADC6140 compared with the ADS1278 which is more broad-market/industrial oriented. The device meets the sampling rate and resolution requirements - but you'd need to build your own board with two of them to get 6-8 channels in one board as our EVM only supports 4-channels natively.

  • Is there an evaluation board for the TLV320ADC6140 chip, where I can use 2 of these boards together to daisy chain the chips to test them together to get my required 6 channels? As I indicated previously, do you have recommendations on the DSP?

  • I am also considering the TMDX5535EZDSP C5535 eZdsp USB Stick Development Kit. What kind of connector do you recommend to connect to the expansion connector port on this device? Is that a standard PCI connection?

  • Hi Caitlin,

At the time of this posting, there is not a single-board option with 2x TLV320ADC6140 devices on it.

Let me loop in some colleagues on the DSP.  There will not be a single-board solution available with what you're looking for, but it should be possible to wire the DSP EVM to our EVMs.
