IWR6843ISK: Stop the sensor when detection exceeds max num of trackingCfg in Long Range People Detection Demo

Hello, TI experts

I'm testing Long Range People Detection Demo for detecting a people passing through a crosswalk with IWR6843ISK. (Toolbox 4.6.0 and SDK 3.5)

But Sensor is stopped when detection exceeds max num of point cloud or tracked object. (configuration by trackingCfg)

The figure below is the GUI screen just before stopping.

I want to know below.

1. Why the sensor stopped

2. How to keep the sensor working with many point clouds or tracked objects

    The maximum number of points and tracks is defined in the cfg file because there is a limited amount of memory in the IWR device. If we allow too many points points read in, the processing chain for all these points will exceed the memory heap available and the device will crash, this is why the limits are in place.

    Limiting the number of points by modifying the detection layer parameters (CFAR and others) or tracking parameters may be helpful. If you increase the SNR requirements of the reflected points you may reduce the number of false detections or small motions from environmental features.

    I'll try to modify the detection layer and tracking parameters so as not to exceed the memory heap.

    But, In the situation where the mentioned sensor stops, I used 2d 50m cfg file(not changed).

    Is this because the parameters in cfg file does not account for memory heap overflow?

    The default profile for that lab sets the max points to 250 and max tracks to 20 in the cfg command below.

    I haven't changed the cfg file, so the trackingCfg command is the sanme, the max points is set to 250 and max tracks is set to 20.

    I don't think there is any change that negatively affects the memory heap overflow, but the sensor stops when many points or tracks are detected.

  • Do you know exactly how many points or tracks it takes to make the sensor stop? Does this correspond with the values in tracking config?

  • No, I don't know how many points or tracks it takes to make the sensor stop. How calculate that values?

  • This would be reported in the TLV header output, and listed in the GUI. Also, it looks like you are using the traffic monitoring GUI? If you run this from the matlab source code, there is an option to record the data, which would allow you to parse the saved UART stream, or playback the session and pause when you get to where the sensor crashed.

    Please see the first section in tm_visualizer.m and set REAL_TIME_MODE and ENABLE_RECORD to 1, and this should save the data.

    I guess, sensor would have stopped due to memory overflow in this next frame process.
    1) What memory is causing the sensor to stop? (MSS data RAM(192K), Handshake RAM(32K) or L3 RAM?)
    2) If can not reduce the number of point clouds(due to sensing performance), is there another solution?

  • Hello,

    Are you able to run the sensor from code composer studio in debug mode? This way you might be able to get a more specific error code that would point you to where the failure is occurring. I don't think the tracker will stop the device if you cross the maxPts threshold, it would just ignore some of the points beyond that number.

    You could also try reducing the max points to see if the device still shuts down. You have demonstrated that 209 points work ok, if you reduce to 200, does the device still shut down? I think you have tried this already.

    I say this because another common error is that all the UART data isn't able to completely transfer before the end of the frame, which would send an error. Depending on the detection layer parameters, this might be ok with 200 points or not. The above two tests will help determine where the error might be coming from.
