TMP117: package choose

Part Number: TMP117

Hi Team,

My customer is searching the solution of temperature sensor.

There are some questions with package performance. The application is measure the skin temperature, and the product will attach on skin.

  1. We found there are two types of package of TMP117. And they have different thermal resistance. If we would like to have the one that measure the temp quickly which one is better?
  2. Is the package of YBG that is less effect by ambient temp?

Thanks!

Kai

  • Hi Kai,

    Thank you for your question.

We found there are two types of package of TMP117. And they have different thermal resistance. If we would like to have the one that measure the temp quickly which one is better?

The YBG Package is smaller, and has lower thermal mass, so in most cases it will provide a slightly faster thermal response than the DRV package. Your PCB layout is going to have a greater effect on the thermal response time than the package selection will when the packages are both this size though.

    1. Is the package of YBG that is less effect by ambient temp?

Yes, the junction to ambient thermal resistance (RθJA) of the TMP117 in the YBG package is higher, so it will conduct heat energy from the air more slowly than the DRV package. With a proper board layout though, either package can be used very well for ambient temperature measurement, or can be used for contact measurement like for skin temperature.
