IWR1642BOOST: Vital Sign Demo is not working in IWR1642

Hi,

I have 4 IWR1642Booster board and vital sign demo is working on only one board surprisingly. Previously, I had two boards and vital worked on only one. I had bought two extra IWR1642 and the sadly vital demo is not working on these new boards too.

I am flashing prebuilt binary to test it but no luck. People count demo is working fine in all of my four boards so there is no chance of faulty board. I have tested these three boards very thoroughly from Automotive toolbox 1.0.0 to 2.4.4 and none these toolboxes binary worked. By doing this I have excluded the possibility of being these board ES 1.0 or ES 2.0. 

Any idea why these boards are not working? I am sure all automotive toolbox examples are 100% compatible with IWR1642 devices.

    Can you please mention the version of Vital signs demo you are trying and the symptoms observed for the non working scenario.
    We would still like to know the version of the boards to make debug easier. We will send instructions for identifying the same.

    I have tried all vital sign demo from Automotive Toolbox (AT)1.0. to 2.4.4 and none of these seems to work. I have got only one out of 4 of my IWR1642 got working on Automotive Toolbox 2.4.3 so for clarity let's take it vital sign demo is not working in AT 2.4.3. I am have flashed prebuilt binary of AT 2.4.3 to take few screenshots and made few observations.

    I am referring to my boards with their last three digits of the serial number and those are 1st IWR1642-> 583, 2nd IWR1642-> 538, and 3rd IWR1642-> 195. The IWR chip is same in all these boards and chip number can be found here in my another e2e post IWR1642BOOST: Which silicon version is this?

    I have observed many working and nonworking scenarios for all of these boards. These three boards worked perfectly on people count demo which makes sure that these boards are perfectly right. Thereafter I tested on AT 2.4.3 again to take some screenshots. [PS:  I have found the same behavior for all version of AT starting from 1.0 to the latest one but I am here attaching testing behavior of AT 2.4.3 only]

    1st Powerup After Flash
    538-> Only Range Profile was giving output other waveforms were almost zero
    195-> Waveforms of heart rate, chest displacement, and range-profile was working and breathing waveform saturated to some output around 2^30. (*1)
    583-> Only range profile was showing the right waveform and others were not being displayed.

    1st Reset but no power cycle
    Same behavior as recorded previously

    2nd Power Cycle
    Same behavior as previously but this time 195 got stuck after transmitting two frames, please see here vital signs demo UI shows nothing with IWR1642 BOOST

    2nd Reset but no power cycle
    Same behavior as after 2nd power cycle

    3rd Power Cycle
    Now, this time I have got the behavior of these boards are interchanged
    195-> Only Range Profile was giving output other waveforms were almost zero except breathing which was at +-2^38, almost infinity
    538-> Waveforms of heart rate, chest displacement, and range-profile was working and breathing waveform saturated to some output around 2^30.
    583-> Only range profile was showing the right waveform and others were not being displayed.

    3rd Reset but no power cycle
    Same as after 3rd power cycle, with I had made a conclusion that boards are changing behavior after a power cycle and sticking to the same after reset. I had observed it after so many additional power cycle and reset. 

    (*1) Boards with this behavior bring breathing waveform back to +-1 after continuous running around 4 to 5 minutes. Breathing waveform sometimes starts around with a flat amplitude of 2^38 a.u. but after 4-5 minutes it gets back to normal. After the power cycle, this behavior is being lost so it is highly unlikely that a board would show the same behavior as previously recorded.  
     

    Here are some screenshots for your reference, as I said earlier these behaviors are not specific to any of boards, these are being shuffle board to board after a power cycle.

    These behaviors are consistent to all boards 195, 538, and 583 across all Automotive toolboxes. I had eliminated the ambiguity of having ES1.0 or ES2.0 boards by trying on all AT versions. I have seen the same behavior.

    I have an update to report scenario #1 in which sometimes breathing waveform converse to normal range +-1. I have monitored frames of UART very closely and found that Breathing and Heart Waveform energy is always being reported infinity despite having breathing and heart amplitude in the range of +-1.

    For your reference #scenario, 1 is like this

After the power cycle, this behavior is being lost so it is highly unlikely that a board would show the same behavior as previously recorded.  


    In this case, breathing and heart waveform comes back to the normal range after roughly 4 to 5 minutes and then the sensor seems to work perfectly but after a power cycle, I again need to wait 4-5 minutes to get back it in working condition. Although, Breathing and Heart Waveform energy remains to infinity in all these cases.

    We have identified an issue in the source code that would result in the vital signs lab working correctly on AWR1642BOOST correctly but having an issue on IWR1642. This issue will be addressed in a future release. Please keep in mind that the release notes do state that this lab was designed for AWR1642BOOST.

    We have identified an issue in the source code that would result in the vital signs lab working correctly on AWR1642BOOST correctly but having an issue on IWR1642BOOST. This issue will be addressed in a future release. Please keep in mind that the release notes do state that this lab was designed for AWR1642BOOST.

    Would you mind to let me know a little more about the bug and where do I look to findout if I can make it right. Is this bug comes randomly? I mean sometimes I get right data but some times not.

    In the dss_data_path.c file under the MmwDemo_interFrameProcessing() function, make sure that all of the static variables are initialized to zero.
