AWR1243BOOST: DataCapturedemo_xWR.lua hangs MSS FW Download failure

Part Number: AWR1243BOOST
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DCA1000EVM, , AWR1243, AWR1443

Setup and install of my AWR1243boost with DCA1000EVM went smoothly. However, when I try to run DataCapturedemo_xWR.lua it hangs at DownloadMSSFw:

[13:00:03]  [RadarAPI]: ar1.ReadRegister(0xffffe218, 0, 31)

What can I do?

  • Hi,

Does your setup work when you don't use the LUA script?

    thank you

    Cesar

  • Yes, when I click "Load (4)" on the RadarAPI, it succeeds.

It appears all is well, except I can't run the demo past that point.

    Thank you for your help!

  • William,

For your AWR1243BOOST, please make sure that it is an ES 3.0 device and not an ES 2.0 device. There are several threads already on E2E that provide instructions on how to identify the ES version of your AWR1243 device. If you do have an ES 2.0 device, you will need to use mmWave Studio version 1 instead of version 2.

From a setup standpoint, please make sure you have two power supplies, one for the DCA1000EVM and another for the AWR1243BOOST. You should also have two USB cables, one for the BOOST EVM and another for the DCA1000EVM that is plugged into the "Radar_FTDI" port.

    Regards,

    Kyle

  • Hello Cesar,

I'm attaching the output log from the mmwaveStudio, which reports problems with Matlab.

However, I can follow the steps through RadarAPI and everything appears connected.  However, when I run the DataCaptureDemo_xWR script, it hangs at the Download MSS Firmware step.

Any advice?  I'd like to use the AWR1243 for teaching a short course on radar.  Thank you in advance.

  • William,

Please make sure that you have MATLAB runtime 8.5.1 (32-bit) installed on your PC. This runtime is needed for the mmWave Studio installation.

    Regards,

    Kyle

  • I believe I have an ES 2.0 device, after consulting "AWR1443: How to check for ES1.0 or ES2.0?"

The chip on my AWR1243Boost board is labelled 946D, and I believe the D means that it is ES 2.0.

I will try installing mmwaveStudio 1.0 next. Thank you.

  • I have installed mmwaveStudio 1.0

Following the Quick Start Guide, unlike with mmwaveStudio 2.0, I don't even get to the RadarAPI

Here's the Output from launching mmWaveStudio.

  • William,

Based on the output console messages that you provided, it does not like like there was any issues with loading the MSS firmware. I do not see any error messages relating to the loading of either the BSS or MSS firmware. Let me know if there is an output log that shows error messages with the MSS firmware loading.

    Regards,

    Kyle

  • Hello,

I have two empty files named adc_data.bin and Temp_data.

And I have a LogFile, which contains the following:
    02-Aug-2019 14:25:43: API:PowerOff,0,

  • William,

The log file that I am interested in seeing is found in the following folder:

    C:\Users\<user_account_name>\AppData\Roaming\RSTD\Output\Log

Please share the contents of the latest log text file. This is where you can see the messages, including errors, that mmWave Studio sends out after every command.

    Regards,
    Kyle

  • William,

Based on the logs that you provided, it looks like you are attempting to load the BSS and MSS firmware software twice. This is not needed. The firmware for both the BSS and MSS only need to be loaded once. The error that occurs on the MSS firmware download failure happens when you try to load it for the second time.

Is there a particular reason that you are trying to load the firmware twice? Based on the logs that you provided, you were able to successfully load both the BSS and MSS firmware, complete a SPI connect, and RF-Power Up. Based on this information, I would not conclude that there is an issue with your device.

When running the LUA Script that is provided in mmWave Studio, the only steps that you need to complete are the reset control and RS232 COM port connection. The LUA script will handle the rest.

    Regards,

    Kyle

  • Hi Kyle,
I was doing that because, the Radar API shows SPI Connectivity Status:  Disconnected
So, I wanted to follow steps 1-5, to get SPI Connect complete.  These steps all work, but then the script fails.
However, if I just issue the RS232 reset, then I get the output logs you find attached.

  • William,

It looks like this script errors out when you try to execute the "SPI Connect" command. You get an RESP TIMEOUT error. In most cases, this error happens because of a physical hardware setup issue. Please ensure that the ribbon cable between the DCA1000EVM and AWR1243 is firmly in place. Ensure that you have the second USB cable plugged into the "Radar_FTDI" connector on the DCA1000EVM. Make sure that both power supplies are connected and that the power switch on the DCA1000EVM is set to "DC_Jack_5V_IN". Finally make sure that there are jumpers across SOP0 and SOP1.

    Regards,
    Kyle

  • I'm attaching an image of the AWR1243Boost as mounted to the DCA board. I've checked all the cable connections are consistent with both the quick start guide and your email.

  • Attached is a photo of the radar chip.
    Line 4, 946D
    D = ES2.0
I appreciate your help very much! Thank you.
  • William,

Yes, your interpretation is correct. Your device is an ES 2.0 AWR1243. You should be using mmWave Studio version 1.0 since mmWave Studio version 2.0 only supports AWR1243 ES 3.0.

It looks like your physical setup is correct as well.

I have another suggestion. Try powering up your device and then launching mmWave Studio version 1.0. Make sure that the software detects your board.

    Then click:

    - Set(1)

    - Connect (2); set the baud rate to 921600 and the COM port to the "Application/UART" port found in Windows Device Manager.

    - Run (to run the DataCaptureDemo_xWR.lua")

These steps should run without issue if your physical setup is correct.

    Regards,

    Kyle

  • Getting closer!  It seems to have successfully loaded and SPI connects, and then I get an error message:   Packet_Reorder_Zerofill.exe cannot find MSVCR120.dll.  It recommends reinstalling software may solve the problem.
    Does this make sense?

  • William,

With this error message regarding the missing DLL file, make sure that you have the Update for Visual C++ 20113 installed on your PC. You can download the installation files here:

Try first installing the 32-bit version. If that does not resolve the issue, then also install the 64-bit version.

    Regards,

    Kyle

  • Prior to receiving this email, I suspected that the problem may be the missing MS Visual C++ so I installed 2019.  The program runs further, and no error message, but the adc_data.bin file is empty.

    I've attached the following files:
    C:\Users\wtbuller\AppData\Roaming\RSTD\Output\Log\Log0058_0_verbose
    C:\ti\mmwave_studio_01_00_00_00\mmWaveStudio\PostProc\LogFile

I don't know if this can be caused by not having the 2013 version of MS Visual C++, so I'd appreciate your help.

  • William,

Yes, you need to install the 2013 version.

    Regards,

    Kyle

  • These are the log files I have, following installing MS Visual C++ 2103 (32 bit) and (64 bit). I received similar errors after installing only the 32 bit version.

    C:\Users\wtbuller\AppData\Roaming\RSTD\Output\Log\Log0062_0_verbose.txt
    C:\ti\mmwave_studio_01_00_00_00\mmWaveStudio\PostProc\LogFile.txt

  • I hope there is some test I can do to determine why I get an empty adc_data.bin file.
When I run the DataCapture script, it appears to be going okay and a window appears momentarily, but then closes before I see any output.  Please let me know what I might try next and I will spend some time on it today.

    Thank you again!

  • Hi William,

Can you try running through all the steps in sequence from the GUI instead of from the script?

    1) You will need to do steps 1-6 on the Connection Tab (the buttons are marked 1 to 6)

    2) Then on the Static Config Tab, the Set buttons for "ADC Config", LP Mode, and RF Init.

    3) Then on the Data Config tab, the Set buttons for Data Path Configuration, Clock Configuration and LVDS Lane Configuration

    4) Then, on the Sensor Config Tab, the Set buttons for Profile, Chirp and Frame configurations

    5) Then SetUp DCA1000 on the left of the screen, and the "Connect, Reset and Configure" button

    6) Then on the Sensor Config Tab, DCA1000 ARM, and Trigger Frame.

Defaults are okay in all the tabs - except take care to use the correct COM port and firmware versions.

Can you see if this manual sequence generates a non-empty adc_data.bin file?

    Best Regards,

    Anand

  • Hello Anand,

Yes, this still produces an empty adc_data.bin file.  Attached are the log files, from C:\ti\mmwave_studio_01_00_00_00\mmWaveStudio\PostProc\ .

  • William,

After you complete all of the steps that Anand listed out for you, click "PostProc" in the SensorConfig tab. If there is a raw ADC file on your PC, it should generate an adc_data.bin file that is not of size zero.

    Regards,

    Kyle

  • Hi Kyle and Anand,

After I follow the steps and push the Trigger Frame button, I can see it highlights and dims the Post Process button.  The next button to be highlighted is the browse button next to the Dump File: block.
I'm attaching a screen capture of the folder where the Dump File is currently pointed.

  • William,

Based on the screenshot you provided, it does not look like your DCA1000EVM is capturing any raw ADC data. If there was any raw data collected, the "adc_data_Raw_0.bin" file would be non-zero. But your folder is showing it as having a size of 0 KB. So that leads me to believe that there is an issue happening with your data capture.

In one of your log files, there was a warning message that said that your Ethernet cable was disconnected and to please check.

Did you make sure to change the IP address on your PC to a hard-coded address of 192.168.33.30? This change needs to happen so your PC can receive the raw ADC data coming in over Ethernet.

    Regards,

    Kyle

  • Thank you. I have my Ethernet port set up correctly; however, I found it appears unplugged unless the board is powered on before I connect it to the computer. When I ensured that it was connected, I ran it and I got an error message referencing “LabView runtime”. Does that make sense?

  • Hello,

So I'm able to execute all the steps that Anand outlined.  Except when I press the "Trigger Frame" button, the "Post Proc" highlights momentarily and dims, and the result is an empty adc_data.bin.  Looking at the Log_verbose file, it is reporting that my Ethernet cable is disconnected.  I found that I must power up the DCA board before connecting the Ethernet cable for it to connect.  It shows it as connected with Unidentified Network.  I have the IP address set as in the documentation.  Is there an additional step that I am missing?
    Thank you again!
    image.png

  • William,

Did you press the "PostProc" after it becomes undimmed following the "Trigger Frame"? The adc_data.bin is not generated until after you hit the "PostProc" button. Up until this point, you will have just a a raw ADC file, as a I mentioned in an earlier post.

With regards to the LabVIEW runtime error you were seeing earlier, if you are still seeing issues, you can try to resolve it by installing LabVIEW runtime 2014.

    Regards,

    Kyle

  • Hello,

I do not get a chance to Post Process. I made a short clip of the problem:

  • William,

Is it possible to upload a higher quality version of the video? It was hard to really make anything out in the video.

    Regards,

    Kyle

  • Hello,

I notice that before trying to capture data, when I attempt to Connect, Reset & Configure the DCA1000, I notice the FPGA Version is 0.0.0.0
This is similar to another user's difficulty on the support boards.

  • Please make sure that you have correctly configured your TCP/IPv4 settings based on the screenshot below:

  • Thank you all again for the help.
I believe my Ethernet is setup correctly.  However, when I attempt to Setup DCA1000,
the FPGA Version shows only as 0.0.0.0

  • William,

Please ensure that Firewall ports 4096 and 4098 are not being blocked by your university firewall. We have seen this issue before.

    Regards,

    Kyle

  • SUCCESS!
Turned off the Firewall long enough to collect data.  Okay, so I'll go play for a while. Thank you very much and have a great weekend.
