LDC1614: Vehicle detection

Part Number: LDC1614

Dear All,

I have an application trying with an extremly large coil: 2 m x 1 m with 3 turn (later can be 4 turns) for vehicle detection.
Now having ~60 uH and 33 nF serial resistance 0.3 Ohm. Sometimes noise is too large and seems the IC is not
able to filter to my frequency effectively and detecting double or multiple times of the base frequency. (similar case in FAQ)
But here when I try to use the deglitch filter its not effective. Of course because of my low frequency that I set.
What do you propose in this situation?

Thanks in advance/
Developer

  • Hello,

    Thank you for posting.

The coil in your application is much larger than what is recommended, and this is likely the source of the issues you are seeing. Please refer to the Inductive Sensing FAQ for constraints such as target distance and sensor size.

    Best regards,

    Nicole

  • Dear Nicole,

thanks for you quick answer. Does it mean you would not recommend this sensor for such application as mine?

I checked the FAQ you linked and I checked designer tools also. Seems design target of the IC was a PCB based coil application or really small coil diameter at least. Understood.

This is why I started to contact you. Slight smile TI chat support has stated my application (vehicle detection) is possible with LDC series. I think so.

And now I found this from the past (with LDC1000, but I think valid with LDC1614 too):

    e2e.ti.com/.../ldc1000-for-vehicle-detection

Do you think if I follow this post and go upper (from 1 MHz to 5MHz) with the frequency it can help to be less noisy? I think the capacitor will be really small and closer to the parasitic capacitance so more noise expected.

Other background experience: seems with ~1MHz and below down to 10kHz our coil (2x1 m with 3 turns) can work as a receiver loop of the electromagnetic noise (LED lamps switching power supply etc...). I am thinking about a specific filter in the loop somehow.

    Thanks in advance/

  • Hello,

I recommend the following E2E post, which also links the following blog post: https://e2e.ti.com/blogs_/b/analogwire/posts/inductive-sensing-how-far-can-i-sense regarding sensing distance and LDC application restraints.

Most LDCs can only sense up to 50% of the sensor coil's diameter, and sensing distances beyond 10 cm are not feasible.

    Best regards,

    Nicole
