CD4051B: CD4051 data sheet clarfications

Part Number: CD4051B
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CD74HC4051, SN74LV4051A

I need clarification on two items in the data sheet.

First, can this device be powered by a single ended 3.3V power supply.

Second, can this device we used to switch analog signals less than 3.0V, if yes, what is the minimum level it can switch.

Thank you,

Steve

  • Hey Steve,

    Happy to help here!
The CD4051B will be able being powered by a supply as low as 3V single ended (VDD = 3V, VSS = GND/0V), so the 3.3V will be fine.
For the second question, the CD4051B will be able to pass signals below 3V when powered by a supply that is at least 3V. Any signal that is below the 3V level and above the VSS can pass through the switch. So in this signal sided case mentioned above, you could pass anything from 0V to 3.3V.

    Thanks,
    Rami

  • Please note that CD4000 devices are optimized for higher voltages; at 3.3 V, there are no guaranteed electrical characteristics. Consider the SN74LV4051A or CD74HC4051.
