What protocol? I²C? How do the two master coordinate with each other?

The protocol is I2C and I3C. I'm not sure how do they coordinate each other.

In theory, both I²C and I³C support multi-master operation with all devices connected directly to the bus.

If your master hardware or software does not support multi-master operation, then you can use 2:1 switches like the TMUX154E (or a cheaper device like the TS5A23159) to disconnect the inactive master from the bus.
