BQ24392 Apple Charger Support

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24392

Can BQ24392 supports Apple's 2A Charge Mode.  Apple has three different biases; one is the 1A mode, one is the 2A mode, and a third is the 2.4A mode. Can you confirm which mode(s) the BQ24392 support?

Best regards,

Matt

  • Matt,

I did some searching and it was not clear to me the different hardware configurations of the 1A, 2A, and 2.4A apple chargers. Do you have information on how these chargers identify themselves? For example USB accessories and chargers use different impedance configurations on the D+ and D- pins to identify the difference between devices. If you could help me find information on how the apple chargers implement the impedance configurations on the D+ and D- pins I can help evaluate how the BQ24392 will detect the apple device.

    Thank you,
    Adam
  • Hi Adam,
I don't have the details on how the Apple detection protocol works and can check with our customer to see if they can provide more info, but our datasheet specifically states that our part supports "Apple Chargers". Do we not know which Apple chargers we support?

    Best regards,
    Matt
  • Hi Adam,
Here is a quick update. We spoke with our customer and he didn't have the details about the Apple detection but noted that they currently have a Fairchild FSA832 in their schematic that is apparently "in the same package as ours, but pads are shorter, drop into our pads" and he was told that it supports the Apple charging protocols. By any chance do you have any info showing any advantages or competitive comparisons of our part vs. the FSA832?

    Best regards,
    Matt

  • Matt,

The customer is correct the FSA832 is the same function an pin out of the BQ24392 that I found on the TI.com cross reference search tool but it isn't in the exact same package.

If you look at the BQ24392 datasheet you can see that the BQ24392 will detect an apple charger and set the GPIOs to indicate full charging if the voltage divider on the charger's D+ and D- pins is between 2.0 V and 2.8 V.

    Thank you,

    Adam
