Can TS3DV642 HDMI switch support USB3.0 or USB3.1 signals?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TS3DV642, HD3SS3212, TS3USB3000

Dear Sir

May I know TS3DV642 could support USB3.0 or USB3.1 gen2 10Gbps ??

I would like to use it for USB TypeC application

Thanks

  • Kai,

Short answer is yes the TS3DV642 can support USB 3.0 (5 Gbps) but not USB3.1 (10Gbps)

These signal switches are passive FET switches and can be thought of ideally as 0ohm wires so any type of signal will pass through them.  The main difference between HDMI and USB is the number or data lanes and the digital protocol but the analog signal that delivers those bits are similar.  To evaluate if a signal switch can pass a specific protocol you need to look at the analog specifications of that analog signal like the voltage level and Bandwidth.

If you look at this chart in this e2e thread it lists several of the analog specifications for common signal protocols.

You will see in the datasheet that voltage level and bandwidth (6.9 GHz) stated in the TS3DV642 datasheet is sufficient to support the USB 3.0 5Gbps signal but not USB 3.1 10Gbps.  (see the switches FAQ thread for more information on data rate to bandwidth conversion)   For USB 3.1 you will need to use a switch like the HD3SS3212.

Why would you want to use the TS3DV642 1:2 switch for USB Type-C?

Would you not want a smaller switch like the TS3USB3000?

    Thank you,

    Adam
