SN74CB3Q3306A: SN74CB3Q3306A vs PI3C3306 for hot swap feature

Part Number: SN74CB3Q3306A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN74CB3Q3306, SN74CBT6845C

HI there,

Looking for a cross to the PI3C3306 for SN74CB3Q3306A came up as well as others but I can’t find any with Hot pluggable/hot swap type functionality (no latch up). Do you know of any that I have missed?

Thanks!

  • Mbbrouwer,

The SN74CB3Q3306A is a direct cross with PI3C3306.  The SN74CB3Q3306 has a feature called "Ioff supports partial power down mode operation. "

This feature means there can be a signal present on the IC while Vcc = 0V as seen in the Ioff parameter below.

This sounds to me like you could have this device on a daughter board that is off and plug it into an active motherboard without issue.  Is that what you mean by hot swap?

Can you define what you mean by hot swap?

    Thank you,

    Adam

  • HI Adam,

Hot swap or hot pluggable pertains to the end use. Usually a card or a board gets inserted on a backplane connector while power is on (what we call live insertion). This means that the device is exposed to many different things which could include signal on the Input pins without power being applied. Also, there could be small transients caused by board parastics during live insertion that could cause latch up if the IC circuit isn't designed for this. A lot of our TCA parts will call out exactly that they can handle this (different functionality though). I'm not sure if the info you mentioned above means that the device can withstand live insertion..... Is this something you can ping one of the designers on?

Many thanks for all your help!

    Cheers,
    Mark

  • Mark,

I have sent you request to our design team.  In the meantime I found these application notes that can be relevant.  These talk about the level of protection you need in live insertion applications.

Logic in Live-Insertion Applications With a Focus on GTLP

Bus FET Switch Solutions for Live Insertion Applications

It looks like the Ioff protection feature will get you hot swap capable but not full protection for live insertion.  Do you know which level of protection you need?

    Thank you,

    Adam

  • Mark,

There are varying levels of hot swap feature.

The SN74CB3Q3306A vs PI3C3306 only have level two hot insertion feature with the powered off protection mentioned above.  If you need level 3 protection including the pre-charged I/Os you may search for device with this feature like the SN74CBT6845C on TI.com search tool.
