RE: Does TS3A226AE support OMTP and CTIA headphones?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TS3A226AE, TS3A227E, TS3A225E

Hi Adam,

Does the TS3A226AE support CTIA and OMTP headphones?

Thank you,

David

  • David,

The TS3A226AE as well as the TS3A225E, TS3A227E audio jack switches were designed specifically to enable a device like a smartphone or tablet to be able to support different types of headphones that physically have different electrical connections.  The Open Mobile Terminal Platform (OMTP) audio jacks have the ground conductor on the sleeve of the plug while the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association (CTIA) audio jacks have the ground conductor on the Ring 2 of the plug.  Having the grounds in different spots in the headphones jacks cause issues for smartphones and tablets without the TS3A226AE because their systems are not flexible enough to support both.

The TI audio jack switches solve this compatibility issue by using an algorithm to detect where the ground and microphone conductors are once the headphone is inserted and routes the signals automatically to either the device ground or audio codec.  This algorithm can support CTIA, OMTP, and headphones without a microphone signal.

You can find more information on the TI audio jack detection algorithm in this post

You can learn about the differences in the TI audio jack switches in the e2e thread below

What is the difference between the 4 audio jack switches TS3A26746, TS3A225E, TS3A226AE, and TS3A227E

    Thank you,

    Adam
