Switching for CAN or USB

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMUX1072, TMUX136

Hi team,

In one of my designs, I will have either CAN or USB communicating to my micro (CAN for typical use, USB for updates). I'd like to find a switch that will allow my to route either CAN or USB to my micro. I'd also like for it to be able to withstand faults in the +/-35V range (+/-15V at least).

Do you have any recommendations as to how to accomplish this?

Brian

  • Brian,

The TMUX1072 is a 2-channel 2:1 switch that could support USB2.0,  5V CAN, and 20V OVP .   I know there is a TCAN1042 device that has the fault protection you require but I'm not sure about a USB transceiver.

Do you have a diagram for what you are doing?

If you place a mux on the digital side of the CAN transceiver do you still need the mux to have the +/- 35 fault protection?  If that is the case the TMUX136 could be an option as well.

    Thank you,

    Adam

  • Hi Adam,

Thank you. To clarify your feedback, TMUX136 is a good option if the Fault protection is not needed between the CAN TRx and MCU? I couldn't find anything in the datasheet that specified Fault or OV protection.

    Thanks,

    Brian

  • Brian,

Correct, the TMUX136 does not have OVP and would be a good choice if OVP is not needed.

    Thank you,
    Adam
