TS3A44159: Negative Signal Capability

Part Number: TS3A44159
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TS5A22362

I'm using the TS3A44159 analog switch IC in my audio circuit. Since the datasheet description mentions audio applications, I didn't realize it doesn't have negative signalling capability. The analog signal range is listed as 0V to VCC. However, there's no apparent distortion when I pass through negative audio signals, and I viewed the negative output signals on a scope. Do you know why this would work even though it's not supposed to pass through negative signals?

  • Icy,

The TS3A44159 has internal ESD protection diodes to prevent negative voltage spikes.  These protection diodes will be come forward biased and start sinking current when the voltage on the I/O pin is < -0.5 V which is where the abs value comes from.  It is possible your audio signals are not large enough to start turning these diodes and start clamping the voltage.

We cannot guarantee performance outside the recommended operating conditions and have alternative analog audio devices that support negative signals like the TS5A22362 type of devices.

    Thank you,

    Adam
