What is preferred method to protect the MUX509 from damage caused by analog input voltage exceeding the MUX analog power supply voltage?
Does the MUX509 use internal ESD diodes to protect the inputs? If so, would a series current limit resistors + internal ESD diodes protect the device by clamping action?

Yes the MUX509 has internal ESD Diodes.
