CCS/LAUNCHXL-CC2650: Firmware version of XDS110 on CC2650 LaunchPad conflict with CCSv7 ?

I've just get my CC2650 LaunchPad. The out-of-box demo runs without problem, but when I went through Project-Zero tutorial, the CC2650 LaunchPad was bricked by CCStudio ver 7.0.0.0042

Before I started Project-Zero, I had confirmed the CC2650 LaunchPad was working properly. The USB device was correctly recognized by Windows system and SmartRF Flash Programmer 2.

The ProjectZeroStack / ProjectZeroApp project was directly imported into CCStudio from Resource Explore. It compiled without problem, but when I tried to run debugger, CCStudio stopped the process and popped up a warning message, claiming that XDS110 firmware needs to be updated.

There was also a error message showed in console at the same time:

Cortex_M3_0: Failed Board Reset: (Error -1040 @ 0x0) A firmware update is required for the debug probe. Click the "Update" button to update the firmware and connect to the debug target. DO NOT UNPLUG THE DEBUG PROBE DURING THE UPDATE. (Emulation package 6.0.504.1) 

I clicked "Update", but CCStudio didn't start firmware update procedure, instead it immediately showed an error message, complaining that it could not find XDS110, and the debug session was brutally terminated.

And then I recheck the system information, the USB device had been renamed as "Stellaris Device Firmware Upgrade". And it can not be recognized by neither CCStudio nor Flash Programmer 2.

I searched everywhere, and finally found similar situation in this thread: CC2650: XDS110 firmware update does not complete, does not re-enumerate. It seemed that CCStudio had set the TM4C129 into DFU mode, but failed to update firmware due to some unknown reason.

Following the instruction in C:/ti/ccsv7/ccs_base/common/uscif/xds110/Readme.txt, I'd managed to un-brick it with xdsdfu -f firmware.bin -r -v command. Now the xdsdfu -e command reads:

However, when I tried to launch CCStudio and run debugger again, I still get the same "firmware update is required" warning. This time I click "Cancel" instead. 

Then I open the Project Properties, in "General" tab I check the Connection setting, and clicked "Verify..." button, as show in the picture below.

And this time the LaunchPad was immediately bricked, again, without even confirmation. The whole error message in console is listed below:

This error is generated by TI's USCIF driver or utilities.

The value is '-265' (0xfffffef7).

and re-plug the XDS110, and try again. If the problem remains, try
updating the firmware using the xdsdfu utility found in the
.../ccs_base/common/uscif/xds110 directory of the CCS installation.

I guess there is nothing else I can do excepts to manually update the firmware, to some specific version that will make the CCStudio happy.

So my question is: what firmware version should I use, and where can I download it ?

    I apologize for the troubles and thank you for such detailed post. Looking at the procedure I see that you correctly followed all alternatives.

    One detail about versions that caught my eye: the version of the TI Emulators component of my CCSv7.0.0.00042 is the same as yours (6.0.504.1) but the version of firmware enumerated by the xdsdfu -e is older - mine is 2.3.0.5.

    This difference is what is causing CCSv7 to always ask to update the firmware, but somehow it is consistently failing to do so. That leads to a suspicion that somehow either this component (the TI Emulators component) or CCS itself were not installed properly.

    If you want to try the first suspicion, you can download the TI Emulators component separately and install it into your existing CCSv7 setup , overwriting any existing problems. This component is available as a standalone installer at:
    processors.wiki.ti.com/.../XDS_Emulation_Software_Package

    (the slight update in the version number is due to an issue with the installer in CentOS 7).

    Thanks for reply. After I made this post I'd found and installed XDS Emulation package 6.0.504.2, but still got same error.

    I'm wondering this error may due to Windows driver, as every time CCS set TM4C129 to DFU mode two system notifications will immediately pop up, the first message says "driver error" and the second says "driver is ready". Since the "Stellaris Device Firmware Update" item in System Info states that it works normally, I've no idea why Windows will show the "driver error" message.

    I'd also downloaded "Stellaris ICDI drivers" from StellarisWare webpage, and manually updated the driver of "Stellaris Device Firmware Update" from version 2012 to version 2015 under System Info, but it still didn't work.

    I'm now working on a Windows 7 machine, fresh installed from 2009 disc, and updated to SP1 manually. I've met tons of troubles installing both CCSv7 (insisted that SP1 update is invalid) and BLE SDK 2.2.1 (BTool-prerequest installer freeze every time while unpacking .NET Framework 4.0) on my old PC, so I've to grab a new one and start from scratch.

    I've solved this problem. The file C:\ti\ccsv7\ccs_base\common\uscif\xds110\firmware.bin also received an update from XDS Emulation package 6.0.504.2. I manually reprogrammed CC2650 LaunchPad, and now the firmware version is 2.3.0.5.

    Detail steps:

    1. Attach CC2650 LaunchPad to PC and check the System Info for an entry called "Texas Instruments Debug Probes".
    2. Open DOS and cd \ti\ccsv7\ccs_base\common\uscif\xds110\
    3. Execute xdsdfu -m
    4. Wait for entry "Stellaris Device Firmware Upgrade" to appear in System Info.
    5. Execute xdsdfu -f firmware.bin -r 

    I'd say that CCStudio failed to update firmware of LaunchPad on my PC simple because it just skipped step 4. It doesn't wait for device driver to be properly activated by system, and it doesn't retry again after xdsdfu -r reports error for the first time.
